Softball Season in Full Swing

The AMHS Varsity Softball Team traveled to Woodland High School this weekend to play in the Round Robin Softball Tournament. The Lady Raptors played three games on Saturday and one on Sunday. They faced off against Holly Hill Academy first. Freshman Annie Riesberg started off pitching, helping the Lady Raptors hold Holly Hill to only three runs. Although the bats were well awake at the early-morning 10:30am game, AMHS could not come back from two errors in the field, and fell to Holly Hill 3-2.

The Lady Raptors were up against Branchville next. The Lady Raptors defeated Branchville in the championship game the year before, so they knew who they were up against. Junior English Laserna pitched, and sophomore Grace Tumbleston was behind the plate. This dynamic duo seemed unstoppable, with defense in the field behind them. Despite the excellent performance by the Lady Raptors, Branchville’s bats were too much for them, and Academic Magnet fell to Branchville, 8-4.

The long Saturday ended with a game against the tournament host, Woodland High School. Freshman Annie Riesberg was the starting pitcher once again. However, halfway through the game, a hard-hit line drive nailed her in her pitching hand, taking her out of the game. Junior English Laserna came in as relief, but Woodland took advantage of the pitching change and pulled ahead of Academic Magnet, 16-1.

The Lady Raptors had a good night’s sleep and were ready for the game on Sunday. They were re-energized, and with the help of Ellie Moore’s friend’s adorable puppy Chloe, AMHS could not be defeated. The Lady Raptors got off to a quick start and held the lead during the entire game against Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School. English Laserna’s pitching fueled Magnet through the game, and the Lady Raptors ended the tournament on a high note, defeating Orangeburg-Wilkinson 8-3.

The Round Robin Softball tournament was a great experience for the Lady Raptors’ softball team, complete with farmer’s tans, sunflower seeds, a cute puppy, Chick-fil-A, and an overall fun time! Freshman pitcher and third baseman Annie Riesberg won the All-Tournament Team.

Be sure to check out the Sports schedule to come out and see an AMHS softball game! Go Raptors!
