15+Songs+You+Should+Listen+to+This+Week

Taryn Crowley, Staff Writer

Hey everyone, it’s your favorite music lover here on the Talon and today I’ll be providing you all with 15 silly songs you’ll love. From rock to reggae to rap to top 40 pop, this list has something for everybody. These songs are listed in no particular order, but it’d make my day if you gave them a listen! At the end of the article, there’s a spotify link to a playlist with these songs if you want to check them out!!!

15. Borderline- Tame Impala

The Slow Rush - Wikipedia

Yes, I agree, all Tame Impala songs sound the same. But I swear this song is one of their most catchy! It’s different! I’m already predicting my next pick based on the production quality of this song. I can’t lie, Kevin Parker is a sick producer, even if most of his songs sound the same. Don’t hate the player, hate the game, folks.

14. Skeletons- Travis Scott

Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD - Amazon.com Music

Tame Impala and Pharrell produced it and Travis Scott and The Weeknd were the lyricists. What a combination of some of the most talented men in their field. I love to see it. When I got to see Travis Scott live in Charlotte, he sang this song and I bawled… like actually cried profusely. If that doesn’t say enough about how magical this song is, then I can’t help you.

13. Drew Barrymore- Sza

SZA - Ctrl - Amazon.com Music

I considered just putting the entire CTRL album, but I think that would be picking favorites. So, I settled for Drew Barrymore, a beautiful song sung by one of the most beautiful people in the world. If you don’t know Sza, listen to this song. I guarantee you’ll fall in love with her.

12. Shakedown Street- Grateful Dead

Shakedown Street - Wikipedia

This is probably one of the most popular Dead songs out there, but it’s also one of their most funky. This song makes me feel like I’m about to go out for a night on the town, but then I remember that I’m 16 and I have a curfew. That’s alright, I’ll just continue to blast it in my room alone during quarantine.

11. Magic- One Direction

One Direction - Take Me Home - Amazon.com Music

I’m sure no one is surprised, but alas: a One Direction song. Fun fact about this song! It was originally recorded in 2012, but was unreleased until just recently in July for their 10th anniversary. It’s…pretty underground. I’m sure you’ve never heard it. I’m just different! Not like the other girls.

10. Paradise- Big Sean

Dark Sky Paradise - Wikipedia

This song is an old favorite of mine, considering it wasn’t written this year. I was pretty crazy in 6th grade, listening to One Direction, Drake, Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar exclusively. Big Sean was no exception. To this very day I know every single lyric to this song and I consider it to be my most impressive party trick. Not that I’m going to any parties right now, of course. This song goes pretty wild with word play and Big Sean’s rap talent, so I’m sure he’ll impress you way more than my regurgitation ever would.

9. Stone Love- Pepper

Kona Town - Wikipedia

Reggae checkkkkkkkk! As we’ve known for a while, I adore reggae. Pepper is one of my favorite artists, mixing rock beats with the reggae sound we all know and love. The song “Stone Love” appears on is their debut album Kona Town released in 2002. Give this fun song a listen, and you won’t regret it. It’s old to many but could be new to tons!

8. Juice (cover)- Harry Styles

Blessed Harry Styles Covered Lizzo's 'Juice' To Fulfil Your Final 2019 Fantasy

Cuz I Love You - Wikipedia

THIS SONG!!!

This cover is why I don’t cry myself to sleep every night over the copious amounts of work I have to do and my terrifying precal grade. Juice, originally recorded and written by Lizzo, is already a super fun and spunky song. Think of happiness and empowerment, and then add Harry Styles to the mix. A magical combination surely to bless your ears. Sadly, he has only released the cover through the BBC, so I’ve provided Lizzo’s version in the playlist.

7. Endless, Nameless- Nirvana

Nevermind - Wikipedia

People say they’re scared of this song, and they should be. With that being said, this is one of my most favorite Nirvana songs of all time. The beginning of the track is the epitome of emo teenage screamo songs, but it switches from this aggressive tone to a slow, soothing riff that kind of reminds me of something Syd Barrett would write. I swear if any of you classic rock fans get on me about that, we’re headed to the ring to duke it out, fair and square. In my head, I relate the song to a story. It’s a perfect reflection of everything Kurt Cobain ever stood for and I love to hear it (hopefully you will be too). Don’t skip it, listen to the whole thing!

6. Objects in the Mirror- Mac Miller

Watching Movies with the Sound Off - Wikipedia

I love Mac Miller!!! This song is a great mix of being catchy and being an actual intellectual song with meaning to his life. He reflects on his past relationships and feelings, but it’s not a sad song. It’s the perfect in between mix! Mac often mixed rap, rock, and pop features within his songs to have a diverse sound like no other, and he definitely accomplished that sound in this song. Honestly, I’m tempted to put more than one Mac song on this list, but I won’t. This one is one of my favorites though, so give it a listen!

5. Die For You- The Weeknd

The Weeknd - Starboy - Amazon.com Music

This song is by far my most favorite song by Abel! It’s about his long-time girlfriend Bella Hadid and it’s one of the most adorable songs in the world, not to mention it’s so catchy it’ll be stuck in your head for weeks. More times than not you can find me swooning over this song.

4. L$D- A$AP Rocky

5 Things You Need To Know About ASAP Rocky's 'A.L.L.A.' Album - XXL

Yes, I know, this is a dr*g song. But,,, it’s SO beautiful. Rocky has such a beautiful voice and this slower, ballad-esque song contradicts from his usual sound. I’m also pretty certain it’s about Lana Del Rey, so it’s got that going for it. What a beautiful couple they would’ve been…anyways…It’s one of his most popular songs and I’m almost certain half of you reading this have heard it at least once. This is a sign to listen to it again. Don’t do dr*gs, kids. Stay in school. Listen to this song though, you won’t regret it I swear.

3. Pursuit of Happiness- Kid Cudi

kid cudi man on the moon the end of day - YouTube

If you know Tongue Tied by Grouplove, you know how it’s a main character kind of song. One you blast on the interstate while driving (at the legal speed limit, of course) with your friends, if you know what I mean. Pursuit of Happiness is that for me. I could cry to this song, rock to this song, and go through every other emotion in between. Cudi is always a safe choice, but if you play this song near me, expect exaggerated and slightly aggressive lip-syncing.

2. From Eden- Hozier

Hozier - Hozier - Amazon.com Music

Ahhhh Hozier. What a beautiful man with a beautiful truth. I’m 97% sure this song is his best. Don’t ask about the other 3% though, that’s miscellaneous. The point is, this song shows off Hozier’s amazing vocals and lyricism while continuing the church metaphor that exists through the entire album. How does he come up with this stuff…he’s got to be some sort of genius or something, I’m sure of it.

1. Cecilia- Simon & Garfunkel

Bridge over Troubled Water - Wikipedia

I love these two men, they make my heart so full. They have tons of bangers, but this one will immediately put you in a good mood. How could you possibly have anything to be upset about when you’re listening to a song that sounds like the patty-cake? The song isn’t about anything real, “Cecilia” is just St. Cecilia in the Catholic church, the patron saint of music. To this day I will never understand why the patron saint of music was breaking both Art and Paul’s hearts, what’d she ever do to them…

That’s all, folks! Those are my 15 songs for you, whether you already know and love them all or not. I know it may seem like my music taste is a headache, but I can pretty much bust down to anything you put on. I hope you rock out to these songs at some point this week!

I ain’t never seen two pretty best frands. It always one of em gotta be ugly.
