What Donald Trump’s Impeachment Means for America

Now over a week after the January 6 Capital riot, the House of Representatives have discussed, debated, and decided that Donald Trump will become the first President of the United State ever to be impeached twice. There have only been two other Presidents to be impeached only once. The House decided to send his impeachment to trial in the Senate, charging him with “incitement of insurrection” with a House vote of 232-197( Democrat majority). What does this all mean though for American’s near future?

Trump Will Make History

As previously mentioned Trump is the first POTUS ever to be impeached twice. This personally is not much of a shock to me due to the fact the President was known for breaking the norms of the commander-in-chief. Speaking of breaking from the norm, he is the first President to have ever had their own party vote in favor of their impeachment. He had one vote in 2019 from Republican Senator Mitt Romney from Utah in agreement that Trump was guilty under one article of abuse of power. He had 10 Republicans vote for his impeachment in the House  His supporters were right, Trump will go down in history books!

The Republican Party is divided more than ever, and still growing

Trump’s base support does not seem to be currently abandoning ship but divides among the congressional Republicans on the future of their party is evident, growing, and happening before our eyes. The Senate trial of impeachment for Trump will not take place until after Trump is out of office but it still decides if Trump receives his $200,000 pension, a one million dollar travel fund. and the ability to run again for re-election. There is some debate as to whether this legally stops him from running, but it will, however, set a precedent for how Donald Trump will be perceived by the Republican party in the future.

The way Republican Senators vote will show American citizens what side of the spectrum our Senators are on, the devoted Trump supporters who believe he should not be condemned for his involvement in inciting a disgusting attack on our Nation’s Capitol, or the more advanced GOP members that understand one’s opinions on fiscal issues and national security does not make them excused from the law.

Senator Mitch McConnell has publicly stated that voting in favor of Trump’s impeachment is not out of the question for him. Not too long ago, no one could not have dreamed he would even consider such a thing. With all that being said, we have a very interesting journey ahead of us.
