What are the Pet Peeves of AMHS Students?

What bugs you around Campus?

While Academic Magnet is a great school filled with wonderful students, there are a few unavoidable little pet peeves around campus. A pet peeve is something that greatly irritates some while it may please others. The term “pet peeve” came from “pet” meaning a cherished thing and “peeve” meaning irritated, combining to form an ironic term for something that irks people.  From jokesters in the classroom to impatient drivers in the parking lots, Magnet students had a lot to get off their chest for this article.

  • “When there’s no more veggies salads or ranch dressing left”. -Burton McCulley

I can definitely feel for all the vegetarians out there, but there’s always cheese pizza!

  • “People who let everyone in front of them in the parking lot”. -Alexa Conlon
  • “Parents that drive through the student parking lots”. -Elizabeth Hample

It’s a nice gesture to let someone out in front of you, but it gets to be a little too much when people take advantage of that gesture and five cars pull out in front of one person. The fastest way to move through the parking lot is to take turns. There is also nothing more frustrating than trying to get out of school quickly and a parents cuts in front of you. Especially when you’ve been waiting in line for 20 minutes. Please go through the carpool line; we’re begging you.

  • “When people correct the teacher for an obvious mistake on the board”. -Chloe Carlsten
  • “When you ask the teacher a question and a student answers it for you”. -Sutton Meyers

We know that you’re just trying to help out, but if it’s not a big mistake, there’s really no need. Also, correcting a peer can come off a little sassy, so it’s a very understandable pet peeve.

  • “Seniors having to stay in study hall for thirty minutes before leaving”. -Anonymous
  • “When people get too comfy in the classroom and take off their shoes”. -Jordan Burrell
  •  “PDA couples”. -Alexa Conlon

  • “When people ask what grade you got on something just so that they can tell you they scored higher”. -Wilson Swenson
  • “People who still talk about how they took AP World History freshman year”. -Suzanna Carlsten
  • “When people gate-keep their answers”. -Lily Thompson
  • “When people say that your bad score is good when they got an A”. -Elizabeth Hample and Lily Thompson
  • “When people complain about getting an A”. -Connor Sawall
  •  “When people think that just because we are intelligent, we are supposed to be mature”. -Harrison Crites
  • “When someone finds out that you go to Magnet and they ask a bunch of questions like ‘what’s your GPA?'”. -Wyatt Mahoney

Everyone can assume that Magnet students are overachievers. We stay up all night studying, we take multiple AP classes every year, and we always have straight-A’s. Realistically, none of those assumptions are true for at least 80% of Magnet students. We definitely work hard, but we are no different than any other teenager. It’s nice to support your classmates, but it can feel back-handed when someone says their good grade is horrible. You know it’s really not.

  • “Slow walkers in the hallway”. -Cy Benich
  • “When people shove you in the hallway”. -Sacha Skaff
  • “When people stop in front of you in the hallway”. -Sophia Benich
  • “When I get hit in the head with an apple”. -Chisolm Pelzer

I will admit that I am sometimes guilty of stopping in the hallway, but I do move over to the side. The rest of these pet peeves are just inconsiderate. An apple to the head?? That would get on my nerves a little bit, too.

  • “When someone takes five snacks at a time from the senior lounge”. -Lauren Faust
  • “Underclassman taking the patio tables”. -Talia Barsness

The fights about patio tables will always be entertaining. It’s not that deep if someone takes your lunch spot, but it is a little disrespectful. Everyone has to wait in line for a patio table, eventually you can snag one if you’re quick enough. The most popular tactic used in this situation is when two groups just squeeze in together, forcing one group out with the uncomfortableness of the crowded bench. Asking nicely could also work, but not always. Also, please don’t take all the snacks at once, especially if you’re not a senior.

  • “When someone makes a joke in class and keeps mentioning it years later”. -Sutton Meyers

I have been terribly attacked in this way and never said anything about geography again, so yes, this is also a pet peeve of mine.

  • “When there are people going up the main stairwell at lunch while everyone is trying to go down”. -Chloe Carlsten

Technically those people are in the right if they are on the right side of the railing, but it’s just inconvenient. It would benefit everyone if they went up a less busy staircase, but they aren’t really doing anything wrong.

  • “When you’re backing into your parking spot and someone drives past behind you”. -Chloe Carlsten

It is crucial that you back into your spot if you want to get out of the senior lot at a reasonable time. It may take a little more time to do than just pulling forward into your parking spot, but it doesn’t take long. All it takes is a few seconds of patience and you can drive by someone AFTER they have parked.

Special Feature: “People who always raise their hand to answer a question in class”. -Cliffie Manuel

I’m not really sure what Cliffie means by this and neither does she. She could not explain her frustration, but it’s definitely there.

We may have some pretty irritating pet peeves, but we love our Magnet. Comment your pet peeves below!
