With the super bowl being over and there being some controversy over the halftime show this year with Bad Bunny’s performance I thought that I would rank my personal favorite halftime shows of my lifetime. For clarification I was born in 2007. These rankings are totally based on which ones I liked and not based on actual music theory or dance techniques, this is purely what I liked to watch the best. Also, some of these I was too young to remember so I had to go on YouTube and watch them there. The rankings are going from worst to best, but all of them that are in the ranking are good. Some of them are throw backs and others are just great performances that were incredible to watch on television and, I would assume in person, I have never been to the super bowl but would love to go and I hope that the Halftime show would live up to these.
Honorable Mention. Kendrick Lamar – Super Bowl LIX
Coming from someone who does not listen to a lot of rap music this was a great performance. With the guest appearances being A list celebrities with was a show to never forget. Serena Williams crip walking and Samuel L. Jackson narrating the whole show made it and awesome show.
10. Shakira & Jennifer Lopez – Super Bowl LIV
Shakira and Jennifer Lopez delivered a vibrant, dance-heavy show that celebrated Latin music and culture. Their choreography was high-energy, and the transitions between styles kept the pace exciting. It was colorful, rhythmic, and globally influential, highlighting the worldwide impact of Latin pop.
9. Dr. Dre – Super Bowl LVI
Dr. Dre headlined a historic hip-hop showcase that brought together major artists including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. The performance celebrated West Coast rap and marked a cultural milestone for the genre at the Super Bowl stage. It was collaborative, energetic, and meaningful in representing hip-hop’s influence.
8. Beyoncé – Super Bowl XLVII
Beyoncé delivered a masterclass in precision and power. Her vocals were commanding, the choreography was sharp, and the staging felt massive. The Destiny’s Child reunion was a nostalgic highlight that energized the crowd. Beyoncé proved she could carry the biggest stage alone while still making it feel personal and empowering. Few performers match her control and presence.
7. The Weeknd – Super Bowl LV
Performing during pandemic restrictions, The Weeknd had to adapt to limited stadium capacity. Instead of relying on crowd energy, he leaned into creative staging. The gold-lit set design and maze-like hallway sequence were visually distinct. His vocal performance remained strong, and the show felt cinematic despite the unusual circumstances.
6. Katy Perry – Super Bowl XLIX
Katy Perry’s halftime show embraced colorful spectacle. From the giant mechanical lion entrance to playful beach visuals, it leaned fully into pop extravagance. Special guests Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz added variety and surprise. It was fun, family-friendly, and packed with memorable visuals that defined mid-2010s pop culture.
5. Rihanna – Super Bowl LVII
Rihanna’s return to the stage after years away created enormous anticipation. Performing high above the field on floating platforms, she delivered a visually striking show built around confidence and style. Without relying heavily on guest performers, she reminded audiences of the depth of her catalog. The minimalist yet bold staging made the performance feel sleek and modern. Adding onto her wonderful halftime show she was at the time pregnant with her second child. That had to have made the performance harder to pull off but she still did a great job singing and dancing. What I remembered most from this performance was the floating floors along with her all red outfit.
4. Lady Gaga – Super Bowl LI
Lady Gaga began her set on the stadium roof before descending dramatically, immediately setting a bold tone. She balanced spectacle with musicianship, playing piano live and delivering strong vocals throughout. Gaga’s performance felt inclusive, theatrical, and celebratory, blending pop hits with emotional moments. It was visually ambitious without losing focus on the music.
3. Coldplay – Super Bowl 50
Coldplay’s Super Bowl halftime show was a vibrant celebration of music, color, and unity. The band filled the stadium with uplifting energy, blending powerful vocals with dazzling visuals. Their performance honored past halftime moments while creating a joyful, inclusive atmosphere that had the crowd singing along. It was emotional, electrifying, and unforgettable. A truly inspiring spectacle for millions watching worldwide. They also brought back, in my opinion, the best performer, Bruno Mars.
2. Prince – Super Bowl XLI
Prince’s performance is legendary for one unforgettable reason: “Purple Rain” performed in an actual downpour. The natural rainstorm turned an already iconic song into a historic moment. Prince’s musicianship, guitar mastery, and stage presence reminded viewers why he was one of the greatest performers ever. The silhouette shot behind the curtain during his guitar solo remains one of the most powerful visuals in halftime history. It was dramatic, emotional, and completely authentic.
1. Bruno Mars – Super Bowl XLVIII
Bruno Mars delivered what many consider the most complete halftime show of the modern era. Opening with a powerful drum solo, he immediately commanded the stage with confidence beyond his years. His vocals were flawless, the choreography was tight, and the band felt authentically live rather than overly produced. The Red Hot Chili Peppers guest appearance added rock energy without overshadowing him. Most importantly, Mars blended old-school showmanship with modern pop appeal, proving he could headline one of the world’s biggest stages at just 28 years old. It was polished, energetic, and timeless—everything a halftime show should be.
All Super Bowl shows are special in their own right and are amazing performances that come from artists who work hard all the time and especially during the months leading up to the big game. Since 2007, Super Bowl halftime shows have evolved into massive cultural events blending music, spectacle, and storytelling. While many performances were impressive, Bruno Mars in 2014 stands above the rest for combining live musicianship, charisma, vocal excellence, and crowd engagement into one unforgettable show. From Prince’s rain-soaked masterpiece to Beyoncé’s precision and Rihanna’s poised return, each performance reflects its era—but Bruno Mars delivered the gold standard.
