After returning to Academic Magnet from their long weekend, students’ spirits seemed to be higher as they may have gotten the break they needed from Quarter 3. I decided to investigate this by asking students in the hallways what they used their long weekend for in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.
I first interviewed Mckenna West who enjoyed spending time with her family. She had an exciting time celebrating her sister’s sweet sixteen on the beach. This must have been freezing with the cool breeze on the coast, however, the beautiful views and soft sand must have made it all worth it. To wrap up her weekend, she did some homework which allowed her to get ahead for the week bringing an end to her long weekend.
Jace Gutting had his grandparents in town, so he also got to spend quality family time with his relatives. On saturday night he went out to a nice dinner with them enjoying the great restaurant scene in Charleston. The previous night he went to the exhilarating Academic Magnet High School basketball game against Phillip Simmons. This game followed our pep rally which must be the cause for the larger attendance, and the fans did their job to say the least. He watched a shocking upset occur with Academic Magnet taking home the win. For his Sunday night he spent time with friends enjoying a nice night the the boys watching eventful NFL playoff football before relaxing and watching the CFB national championship before returning to school.
I then interviewed junior, Hank Houseal, who had a weekend full of golf where he played all three days. Hank played once at Snee Farm and twice at a golf simulator that he has a membership to. He really worked on his craft with aspirations to join our golf team led by studs like Henry Lannan and Davis Maiden with Mr. Stackhouse guiding the way for these young stars. On top of that he got quality TMP and Mock Trial practice over the weekend; even though the TMP is done, he still reminices on his days practicing after school.
Blake Yarborough spent his Friday in a similar way as Jace. Right after school he went to Huey Maggoo’s which is an excellent chicken place. He followed that up with a trip to the Ravenel basketball courts where he caught some wins of his own. Blake has gotten compared to a hybrid of Shaq and Curry out at Ravenel as he resembles them with his play. He has shaq’s shooting combined with Curry’s size comparatively to the league. All jokes of course, of the people he plays with, Blake is often one of the best players on the court being my first overall pick everytime for our infamous pick and roll which is known to be the second best pick and roll ever. Blake followed that up with attending the basketball game with Jace and other AMHS students where he then hung out with the players afterwards to celebrate the unexpected win. Saturday Blake woke up and went to work at Rodney Scott’s where he is one of the best employees. He joined Jace once again on Sunday to have a calm boys night to watch the NFL playoffs. Blake also wrapped up his weekend with the CFB national championship game while playing rocket league with the skill level of a Silver 1 as he is only Gold because Allen Darden(the mystery Magnet student) and I carried him.
Mateus was surrounded by basketball. He put shots up all weekend with a mix of playing and watching basketball. He spent his weekend hanging out with Blake and Jace going to the AMHS basketball games and the Ravenel basketball courts. This seems to be one of his favorite activities as of late as he has shown up there on numerous occasions.
Charlie Claus spent part of his weekend working at fishcamp which he says is a great spot as he works there with all his homies serving delicious sea food. He really likes his manager Jen, so he would like to shout her out if she happens to be reading this. He ironically also was playing basketball at Ravenel, however, this was on Saturday while everyone else played on Friday. It is shocking how manny people have been playing at the courts lately. He spent the rest of his time on the three day weekend studying and preparing for the upcoming school week as he made sure he was ahead of the game putting his extra day to good use.
Sophia Easterbrook said she also spent her weekend working after her Friday night basketball extravaganza watching Magnet beat Phillip Simmons. She works at Point Break which is a Coffee place on James Island very close to Bagel Nation. She encourages people to go check it out to make her work days more exciting. Saturday night she hung out with her friend Anna from James Island High School when they went shopping and to Chipotle downtown. They got jewelry from My Sister’s Cottage downtown, specifically they got bracelets and necklaces. They embraced conversation relating to their new jobs as tennis coaches. Sophia is a two time state champion with the AMHS tennis team, so her sharing her knowledge with the next generation of tennis players will lead to a bright future for these young stars.
Molly Tombs chipped her tooth on a gusher on Friday. This is heavily unexpected because Gusher’s are very soft with a gooey inside making them one of the most delightful snacks ever. I personally could eat Gushers everyday and never get sick of them, but after this experience Molly might not want Gushers anytime soon in fear of chipping her tooth again. She made sure to go to the dentist on MLK day to fix her tooth which she was dying to get done.
As you can see, everyone spent their three day weekend effectively. They made sure to make the most of their long weekend while also appreciating MLK for all that he did.
