When we all chose to attend Academic Magnet we knew that we were going to be in for lots of time spent reading. There are definitely some books that are more beloved than others. My personal favorite would be one that I read for Ms. Shifflette’s English 4 class summer coming into this year, Atonement, was a great book that had my mind spinning till the very end. I was wondering what books other students loved. I will be asking a couple of students which books were their favorite and why they loved them so much. Also what grade and class they read them in.
- Reed Clendaniel Frankenstein, I read this my sophomore year in Dr. Hays class. It was a great book and I loved how I was finally able to learn about something that has been so popular. That English 2 class had many great reads, but Frankenstein is by far my favorite.
- Jack Tierney. My favorite book is by far Lord of the Flies. The book mixes actions with a much deeper commentary about the laws of humans in the wild. I had to read this in preparation for my 10th grade English class. Funnily enough, I was actually on an island in the jungle when I read this. It felt all of the more real while I was on a service trip on the Galapagos islands. This made the book all of the more relatable. The conflict between rifle, piggy, and the hunters fuels a narrative that can entertain you forever. It also has great reread value, as there are new interpretations that can be found with every read. You can read this at face value like a story book, or as much more of a psychological thriller. There is a lot more to meet the eyes with this book, and at some point it is even a little funny. All the way to the end, when the British soldier reprimands the boys for not acting with higher quality as brits.
- Molly Tombs, I like Great Gatsby the best, read it in 11th grade, I like how we got to watch the movie which was a great way to round out the end of the first semester, the party theme/plot line which was awesome to immerse myself into and made me wish I was around in the roaring 20’s , I thought the plot twist was very interesting and it caught me off guard, watching the movie the day before winter break was a peak memory but the ending was super annoying, I would still recommend this very much.
Thank you Reed, Jack, and Molly. I am sure that all the underclassmen can’t wait to read these novels. For me it was a great way to wind down the day and take a break from the stress. But all while you’re calming down at the end of the day, you are still getting work done. I hope all of y’all enjoy the many books that still you have to read!!
