Typically in high school, many students find it difficult to find time to themselves. This time is often spent relaxing, engaging in hobbies, and binge watching TV shows. In the past year, multiple exciting television shows and movies have been released–such as Stranger Things 5, Zootopia 2, and Superman. However, with all of these new releases and riveting plotlines, it reminds many of a simpler time when we all watched the same kids shows. So, I decided to ask a few Academic Magnet students what they watched as children:
Starting off strong with our sophomores, Maggie Schwartz and Kamya Pham enlightened me with their favorites. Kamya, an avid Star Wars fan, loved watching Clone Wars when she was younger. A show that follows (primarily) Anakin Skywalker, Clone Wars is an exciting series that can be watched by multiple age demographics. She reminisced about rewatching multiple times and noting that her favorite character was Ahsoka, Anakin’s apprentice. Maggie Schwartz especially loved My Little Pony and its message about friendship and adventure. Her favorite character was Pinkie Pie, and she rewatched all 8 seasons 3 times.
When asked about his favorite childhood TV show, senior Bennet McKnight mentioned a throwback to his early childhood: Peter Rabbit. Bennett always watched Peter Rabbit at his grandparent’s house, so it holds a lot of sentimental value. He noted that he was extremely scared of the fox character, stating that the character intrigued him even more about what would happen next in the show.
In a conversation with senior Reed Clendaniel, he told me “There were just so many shows I loved. I lowkey really liked Blue’s Clues and Super Why, because he’s the guy. My favorite show now is How I Met Your Mother. It’s funny because Super Why got me to try green peas while HIMYM convinced me to try olives. So I guess these shows improved my food habits!” Yay! Glad to know that binging TV shows have some benefits, Reed!
Many people commented on shows that helped them look at science and wildlife. Jack Tierney (12) had a favorite that is very common in both the classroom and at homes. Wild Kratts on PBS offered both education and fun adventure, making it an optimal choice for childhood TV. Furthermore, junior Sabreen Adem appreciated educational shows as well, saying that her favorite part of her elementary school science class was when they would watch the Magic School Bus. Many of us can agree that it was the best way to spend 45 minutes during the school day. It offered many science and physics lessons while creating engaging episodes.
Finally, senior and co-editor of the Talon Molly Tombs excitedly answered, “My favorite childhood TV show was Jessie on Disney, though I do still occasionally rewatch. I loved the New York City scene, and I was always jealous of their penthouse. The Christmas episodes are the best, so I highly recommend!”
In conclusion, the span of watched childhood TV shows expands far past this list, however, it is nice to see what was especially memorable to our AMHS students!
