Hi Raptors! Today I asked a lot of different seniors select questions about their high school experience, which can be a huge help for all the underclassmen at AMHS! Keep reading to find the answers to all the questions you might be asking yourself before the big Senior year!
First, we have some answers to questions regarding school. While at Magnet, it can be challenging to balance everything on you plate. I asked a couple of our awesome seniors the questions listed below:
What classes do you recommend taking before graduation? “My favorite was AP Psych because that set me on the path of double majoring in psychology. Mr. Stackhouse was also very influential in my path and he is one of the teachers that guided and helped me the most during my junior year.” -Sophia Easterbrook
Which teachers or electives were your favorites, and why? “Mrs Hurt and my newspaper class because all my great friends are in there and we just have a blast every class. We also get to interview different students and get a lot of different perspectives from our school. I would highly recommend for upcoming seniors to take Newspaper!!” -Sam Abney
How do you balance difficult classes with everything else going on? “Well, I manipulate and compress time. I have more than 24 hours in a day. My first day starts at 6 am and goes until 12 pm. My second day is from 12 am to 6 pm. My third day is 6 pm to 12 am. I make the most of the time given to me in a day and this is why I am capable of balancing everything.” -Jack Tierny (The Talon does not condone nor understand this message of not sleeping)
What’s one study habit you wish you’d learned earlier? “I wish I had learned how to actually do my work. I used to just not submit my work until Desbrow called my parents and whipped me into shape. I would just recommend getting your work done and submitted during the school week so you can have the weekend to yourself and your own enjoyment.” -Reed Clendaniel
Now that we have asked questions based on school and academics, let’s have some light-hearted and fun questions up next. The questions down below are more focused on the social scene of high school, the fun part!
Favorite High School Memory: “My favorite memory was during freshman year when we played Hanahan and we lost at first, and they posted a TikTok saying “What happened AMHS?” but then the next game, we won and we stormed the court and yelled “What happened” right in their face. It was such a peak memory.” -Blake Yarborough
What’s the best way to make your senior year meaningful? “I think the best way to keep your senior year in your memory forever would be to find a great group of people and surround yourself with them. Leave all the childish stuff in the past and just hang out with the people who make you feel good. Also, staying active in school has really made this year fun. I am looking forward to playing a senior year sport and being with my favorite teammates. Senior night should also be a grand time.” -Bennett Bair
How has high school changed you as a person? “It has helped me prioritize my time and learn to balance my work and social life. I have learned to set many goals in the future so I have something to strive for in life. I think Magnet is such a unique experience and without it, I would not be the same person I am today.” -Zuriel N
What do you do to stay positive when things get stressful? “I just try to remember that I have worked hard enough to be at this school and I deserve to be here. I know that some weeks are bound to be more stressful and busy than others, but they will always come to an end and I will have a new, fresh week to start.” -Jaidon Daley
So overall, high school flies by in the blink of an eye. One day you’re trying to figure out your locker combination, and the next you’re walking across the stage at graduation. The biggest piece of advice that our class of Seniors can give to underclassmen is to make the most of every moment, both in and out of the classroom. Don’t be afraid to get involved early: join clubs, try out for sports, attend the football games, and go to Prom/Semi Formal! You might find yourself developing a new passion or making friends that will last a lifetime!
Take your classes seriously, but don’t let grades define you. Learn how to manage your time and stay organized; those skills will help you far beyond high school. If you don’t understand something, ask for help-teachers actually appreciate it when you do. And whatever you do, don’t wait until junior year to care about your GPA: every semester counts!! You will appreciate your hard work when you get started on those college applications, and trust us when we say, start. them. early.
Socially, be kind to everyone. High school can sometimes feel like cliches, but it really isn’t. Kindness and respect go a long way. Surround yourself with people who make you better and lift you up. Don’t try and fit in everywhere; instead, focus on being you and finding those people who appreciate it. As you progress throughout the years, don’t forget to appreciate the little things: Friday night games, spirit weeks, random class jokes, quiet walks between periods, you’ll miss those more than you think. Senior year will come fast, and you’ll look back wishing you hadn’t rushed through it all. So take risks, learn from your mistakes, and stay true to who you are. High school is your chance to grow, explore, and figure out what kind of person you want to become. Make it count! You only get one shot at these awesome 4 years. And forever bleed Black and Green!
