Please tell me a little bit about yourself and how you got started in your CrossFit journey.

“I did gymnastics for about 12 years, but I ended up quitting when I started my freshman year at AMHS. I tried different sports–like cross country and swim– my freshman and sophomore year, but I never really fell in love with any of them. My dad had actually been the first to do CrossFit, and then he quit for a bit. When he started it up again, he made me come with him, which I wasn’t sure about at first. I immediately loved CrossFit…just kidding. I actually hated the first day. It was so hard and I left feeling unfit. But over time and with a lot of training, I started to get better and became obsessed with working towards my goals. Now, I train 5-6 days a week, usually for an hour or so. My goal is to compete in the CrossFit Games and become a professional CrossFit athlete.”

How would you describe your CrossFit community?

“The community is honestly one of the best parts of the whole experience. Being one of the youngest, everyone is like a parent to me. They are always supporting me and helping me in any way they can. I don’t think that I could do this without them, so I’m forever grateful for my community.”

What do you think is the hardest part?

“Personally, the hardest physical part is the cardio. [For reference, CrossFit cardio includes running, biking, rowing (machine), and skiing (machine).] Otherwise, a large part of CrossFit is the mental game. It can be hard to get up everyday and go to train, so I really have to motivate myself and keep working hard. Luckily I have my dad to also help me stay on top of my training. He is one of my biggest supporters and really pushes me.”

What feels the most fulfilling about the sport?

“The most fulfilling part about CrossFit is definitely that feeling of when you set a new personal record. I train a lot and work really hard every workout, so to see it pay off is a big moment for me.  It motivates me to keep going and see just how far I can go in this sport.”

What does your perfect CrossFit day workout consist of?

“My perfect workout would probably start off with a lifting session. I would max out 205lb on the shoulder to overhead and deadlift at 305lbs. I would follow that with a sprint style workout with a heavy barbell. Since I loved gymnastics when I was little, I like to incorporate some gymnastic elements into it to make it more fun. To finish it off, I would end with a nice mobility session where I do multiple stretches, use a foam roller, and maybe a cold plunge or sauna. I would really do anything to get me ready for the next workout and to take care of my body.”

What was your journey to getting where you are?

“I train either once or twice every single day. After consistently training, I competed in the CrossFit open that happens in February every year. It consists of three workout over three weeks and allowed me to get a ranking. I got 83rd in the open for my age group, so I qualified for the semifinals that the Top 200 are invited to. This momentum has allowed me to keep competing and climbing the ranks. This year, I am in the 18-34 year old age group, and I have a lot of fierce competition. I’m ready for the upcoming season, and I’m hoping to do well!”

Would you recommend others to start CrossFit? Why?

“Oh yes, definitely. For starters, you have a coach and someone to hold you accountable, so you really don’t have to worry about making your own workout. It’s a lot of guidance and expertise from others which allows you to focus on getting stronger and breaking personal records. The community is really spirited and will always encourage you to train harder, and I have found that that motivates me. It’s also very easy to modify your workouts to make them doable for year instead of overexerting yourself. The best part is that you can compete if you want to but it’s not necessary, so it’s a sport for everyone looking to get stronger!”
