Sporting events at Academic Magnet are always great fun: they bring together the school (when people come) and show everyone a great time. From football to basketball to soccer and even some baseball, these events are great ways for the students to come together as one and cheer on their peers. So far this year, as a school, we have seen mediocre attendance at football games and for basketball, except on “Jam the Gym” night, the attendance has not been great. What is there not to love about rooting for the Raptors in the Birdcage?
After talking to some people around school on why they love going to support and cheer for the raptors, I gathered a lot of the same information. They all LOVED IT!!
Senior and golf phenomenon Henry Lannan said that going to watch his friends play football and basketball is one of his favorite ways to spend a Friday night. He gets both the entertainment of sport along with the comradery of being with his friends who do not play. Since golf does not always draw the biggest crowd—I know because I am also a part of the team—it is always great to get into the atmosphere that is attending the games.
- Henry, thank you for all the support you have given your Raptors over the past four years. I know they have loved seeing you in the stands and it will not feel thesame without you. Hopefully the golf team will be able to draw some fans this season.
Senior Daniel Huang, a studious student and former volleyball player, told me that going to the games was a nice way to take a break from the stress of school and relax. He has worked hard for four long years to get into the school of his dreams, Duke. But, he was still able to make time to support some of his dearest friends on the football field. Now that he has been accepted and chosen to attend, Daniel says that he plans to come to many more basketball and soccer events to do two things: cheer for the Raptors and enjoy time with friends.
- Congratulations on Duke, Daniel!! We will all be looking forward to seeing and healing you at many more basketball games. LIKE THIS FRIDAY AT HOME AGAINST PHILLIP SIMMONS!!! As well as soccer games where the boys team and the girls team will hope to and most likely will go back to back state championships.
We hope to see many of y’all there with these upcoming games to show your support for the schools and the teams who work hard all season. My freshman year, I remember when the student body president at the time, Vishwa Veeraswamy, was giving us advice on how to make the Magnet life go smoother and he said, “don’t do homework on Fridays.” Instead, he advised us to spend the time relaxing and taking a break from the stressful week we had just accomplished. So, use your Friday to relax, take a break from the stress of school, and cheer for the Raptors.
