Winter Semi 2026 is coming up on January 31st from 7–9:30 PM. It will be held in the Academic Magnet gymnasium, and the theme this year is Golden Hour. This dance is the perfect excuse to dress up, dance, and spend a fun night with friends outside of school. Magnet dances are always something students look forward to, and semi is no exception.
For many freshmen (and honestly even some upperclassmen), your first high school dance can feel a little intimidating. To help with that, here are some frequently asked questions about how the Academic Magnet Winter Semi usually works.
Do I need a ticket?
Yes! You will need to purchase a ticket in order to attend Semi.
Pro tip: If you have an iPhone, add your ticket to your Apple Wallet so it’s easy to pull up when entering the dance, especially if the internet connection is slow.
Do a lot of students go?
Yes! Students from all four grades attend Semi every year. Since it’s the only school dance for freshmen and sophomores, it’s especially anticipated. It’s a fun event that brings together students, teachers, and administrators in a relaxed, social setting.
What should I wear?
Since this is a semi-formal event, casual clothes are discouraged. Many girls wear short formal dresses and save long gowns for prom, but wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable. Dresses come in all kinds of styles, colors, and cuts, so pick something that fits your personal style.
Most boys wear a button-down shirt or dress shirt with dress pants. Adding a blazer, tie, or bow tie is common and encouraged. Since the dance is in January, consider bringing a jacket so you’re not freezing on the way in or out.
Do I have to dress for the theme?
The theme this year is Golden Hour, inspired by warm tones, sunsets, and glowing light. Dressing to the theme is not required, but it’s definitely welcome. Think gold, champagne, soft oranges, blush, browns, or anything that gives sunset vibes. Metallic accessories or warm-toned details are an easy way to lean into the theme.
Where can I get a semi-formal dress?
You can rent, buy, or borrow a dress. If you’re buying, popular options include Revolve, Lulus, Princess Polly, Edikted, Runaway the Label, and The RealReal. If you want to rent to save money, check out Fashion Pass, Nuuly, or Rent the Runway. Borrowing from a friend is also a great option and usually the cheapest.
What are corsages and boutonnières, and are they necessary?
Corsages and boutonnières are a classic semi-formal tradition, especially for people going with a date. A corsage is worn on the wrist, and a boutonnière is pinned to a blazer lapel. They can be ordered ahead of time from florists and usually cost around $30–50 for corsages and $15–20 for boutonnières. They are completely optional, but many people like them for pictures and tradition.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Bring a small purse or bag with your phone to show your ticket. Phones are allowed at this event. You may also want lip gloss, a charger, or anything small you might need during the night.
Will there be food and drinks?
Yes! There will be a concession stand with snacks and drinks like water and soda. These are free, so no need to bring extra money.
Do I need a date?
Nope. Dates are not required. Many students go with friends or in groups, and plenty go solo. Not having a date is completely normal, and you’ll still have an amazing time.
Can I bring a guest from another school?
Yes. Students from other schools will be allowed to attend Semi. If you plan on bringing a guest, both you and your guest must complete a guest form. The guest will also need signatures from a parent and a school administrator. More details will be shared soon.
What kind of music will be played?
There will be a DJ playing a mix of popular songs, including throwbacks and current hits. If there’s a song you really want to hear, you can request it at the DJ booth during the dance.
Are there any activities besides dancing?
In past years, there has been a photo booth set up in the back of the gym. It’s a great way to grab pictures with friends and make memories from the night.
