What are Magnet Students Doing for Fall Break-
After seemingly endless school work and homework I can bet every Academic Magnet student is ready for a week full of food and rest this fall break. Whether it’s a long car ride to a crowded house from Thanksgiving, or staying home enjoying the crisp fall weather in Charleston, everyone has their own way of enjoying their final break until winter. From Thanksgiving and Fall Traditions to everyone’s favorite fall treats, here’s a glimpse into what our student body is doing.
For our senior Riley Shelly, his fall break will look like a perfect mix of family, travelling, and being active. He plans to take a fall visit up to Clemson which he’ll plan to visit his girlfriend who attends there. He’s been looking forward to seeing her for a few months now and on the way back home he’ll make a pit stop in Columbia to visit The University of South Carolina and to see his relatives before heading back home for Thanksgiving in Charleston. Riley says he’s “excited for a week off of school to just reset”.Tennis is one of Riley’s biggest passions and he plays for our school during the spring but he is already eager to get back into his grind routine. He plans to stay active this break by hitting serves and rallying with his dad who also plays tennis. Riley doesn’t complete his spring break without a few key moments in Charleston. He plans to take a trip to Sullivans Island for a beach sunset watch which is one of his favorite traditions. When it is time for Thanksgiving, he plans to eat his aunt’s homemade mac and cheese as it’s the highlight of his meal. He says it is always the best thing on the table which he likes to wash down with his favorite fall drink sweet tea. Between playing tennis, travelling, and spending time home with family and friends Riley plans to have a stellar fall break.
While our previous students are in need of packing a suitcase or taking a flight, Tripp plans to stay close to home and is glad in doing so. He spends his Thanksgiving at his grandparents house in Goose Creek which has been a family tradition for years now. He says they always have a huge lunch and dinner which makes it basically two Thanksgivings in one day. For Tripp his holiday break is based on good food and good people which is what he cares about most. His favorite food at dinner is the ham but he does admit that the apple cider goes well with any fall food. He’s also planning to take advantage of this break to hangout with his friends while he has extra time to unwind. As for sports he plays football at Magnet and is unsure whether his coach will make them practice but he said he’s ready for anything the coach will throw at him. His goal is to keep it simple and stay active and enjoy his break from his junior year.
While many are traveling to the beach or staying in the south this senior Matthew Seminoff plans to take himself up north to the big apple. In the heart of NYC he is looking forward to spending time with family and friends as they dive into the city and all it has to offer. He plans to watch two big Broadway shows, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and if he can manage to get a ticket, Hamilton. Matthew’s favorite fall tradition is a little hard to explain but it is an egg cracking competition his family holds every year where everyone has to protect their egg while trying to crack everyone else’s egg. Between the laughs and city lights he was excited to reconnect with his family. Matthew who just got selected for the Varsity basketball team here plans to keep his hoop dreams alive and is going to play pickup games across the city whether indoor or outdoors he is ready to play basketball surrounded by the city.
Arthur Lee is still unsure of his final plans but one thing is for sure he is ready to eat food at Thanksgiving. He is spending his whole break at home in Charleston and celebrates thanksgiving with his grandparents. This week for him is about slowing down and enjoying no school work. He enjoys making the stuffing and turkey with his dad and says they always turn out perfect and he enjoys washing it down with warm apple cider. Arthur also trains for baseball year round and is going to keep it up with winter workouts. Between catching up on sleep and school he’s looking forward to this fall break.
Molly Tombs fall break is straight out of a fall postcard, she is headed to Hilton Head Island to visit her grandparents and her great-aunt, which is going to turn her family getaway into a week full of golf, shopping, and relaxing by the water. The highlight of her trip is watching the Macy’s Day Parade which is a tradition she looks forward to every year. Thanksgiving is no joke at the Tombs household which is a big family event. Molly likes to help out with Turkey with her grandmother. She also helps prepare the mashed potatoes which she likes to eat with the turkey and calls it the “unbeatable combo”. For dessert they make homemade apple pie which she likes when it fills the house with the warm scent of cinnamon, apples, and butter. Her favorite tradition is after they eat Thanksgiving dinner the whole family gathers in the living room and they put on the holiday classic “Home Alone” which kicks off the Christmas season. Molly says this is a tradition that “never gets old, no matter how many times we have seen it”. In her break she also plans to attend the Carolina vs Clemson game on rivalry weekend which is always a great way to catch up with her friends during the break. Between these family traditions and the football visit Molly is planning to rest up for the rest of break and is eager to sleep in. She says her favorite fall drink is an iced pumpkin chai latte she gets from Starbucks which is best described as “fall in cup”. Her break sounds to be filled with family and friends, great food, and yearly traditions which are going to be both cozy and restful. She also wants to add how she plans to light a fall candle to keep her room warm and cozy throughout the break
