There are many different activities throughout the day that every Academic Magnet High School student goes through. Many are very similar to what students at others do everyday, eat breakfast, shower, lunch, go home, and eat dinner. But the unique schedule of each student here varies greatly. In this article there is not one student who we will be talking about and it will just be a combination of Jaidon Daley’s day and Bennett Bair’s day. THis is the daily life of us after basketball season starts, because this is when the year truly gets busy.
Jaidon: 6:30 AM wake up. This early morning wake up is not uncommon to Academic Magnet High School students since many of them live further from the school than they would at most public schools. Along with this early rise, Magnet students can face an absurd amount of traffic in the mornings and afternoons thanks to a long commute. However, many find a way to make this time productive whether it’s doing homework on the bus or listening to music to soothe your nerves in the car.
Bennett: 7:20 AM wake up. I am lucky enough to live very close to the school so I do not need to wake up super early and I enjoy the extra sleep. I then go and brush my teeth to make sure that I do not bother others with the stench of unbrushed teeth. After that I make sure to pick out what fire fit I will be wearing for that day, this usually includes clothes from either the Citadel or Yeamans Hall. Next I make sure to pour some coffee so that I will be awake for the classes in the day. Luckily I begin my day with Mrs. Yackey and Mrs. Roop so it is always entertaining and I do thoroughly enjoy my morning classes.
Jaidon: 10:10 2A take my first test of the day in AP Government. I was very worried going into it, however, I knew what I was getting myself into when taking this class, so I felt prepared. After this I did review for my 3A Spanish 4 quiz which was a FUN way to come back from my 4 day weekend. I do enjoy these classes as I feel I learn so much about other cultures and the politics in the United States. You can’t expect much less out of this academically driven school, and mornings like these make lunch even more looked forward to.
Bennett: 10:10 2A I go to my awesome Spanish 5 class. Here we always have a great time with Dr. Francis and always learn new terms and vocab. We have also been reviewing old terms and grammatical rules, just to shine in our craft. Having a teacher who not only taught at the College of Charleston but also lived in Chile is greatly beneficial to our learning and it is awesome knowing how much he enjoys the language. The best part of this class is every Thursday or Friday we bring in snacks for the class. It is a small class so it does not break the bank to purchase for everybody. When it was my turn I brought in doughnuts which are a classic for snack day. Then I go to my 3A English 4 class which is an absolute banger of a class. Ms. Shifflette is a great teacher and is great at engaging students to join in the class. She also makes great fun projects for us to do like our presentation on the Canterbury Tales which is great fun because we only have to read one but you learn about all of them through your classmates’ presentations.
Jaidon and Bennett: 1:15 Lunch – I finally made it which was so relieving because with the new schedule, study hall right after lunch means your school is completed once you get to lunch. Lunch is a great time for students to socialize as I do with fellow writer Bennett Bair. I indulge in a phenomenal meal being the italian pasta dish from the school lunch.
Jaidon and Bennett: 2:00 The final class of my A-day was study hall which was pleasant as always thanks to my friends joining me for further academic discussion in study hall. One of the perks of being a senior is the early out ability which allows seniors to leave at 2:30. This also allowed me to leave school and get a second lunch before basketball tryouts at 4.
Jaidon: 2:30 I finished the school day and went to Chic-Fil-A to feast on a chicken sandwich, mac and cheese, and fries. This may not seem like the best pre-tryout meal, however, it did the job for me as I was still starving after school lunch. I had a great time playing Clash Royale and indulging in some great food before returning to the school.
Bennett: 2:30 After I got done with doing some AP Government work for 30 minutes in the study hall I went to Gerald’s Tires and Brakes in order to get some work done on my car. While I love the people at Gerald’s they do a good job because there is always a long line. Everybody knows that their service is great and they greet you with a smile. After that I joined Jaidon at Basketball in order to make it to tryouts.
Jaidon and Bennett: 4:00 we made it back to school and were in time to do rehab for Jaidon’s ankle before getting it taped up by the trainer. Afterwards, we went into basketball tryouts with motivation to try my best as the final cuts were being made. We scrimmaged for the majority of the team after warming up with our friend Billy, which allowed us to perform well and make the team.
Jaidon: 5:00 I had to leave tryouts 30 minutes early to make it to the NHS induction ceremony. This led me to shower for the first time in the locker room at school which was shockingly pleasant with good warm water and high pressure. I got dressed up fancily for this fine event after listening to a phenomenal speech and having some more quality food before heading home and getting some good sleep.
Bennett: 5:30 I went home from basketball and watched some TV and ate some chili that my Mom had cooked the week before. It was absolutely great. Then I took a shower and went to bed to get some good rest and begin the next day.
