The NFL has been confusing this year to say the least. The most telling way to show this is through the wins and losses that teams have accumulated to either. For example, the Panthers have beat the Falcons by 30 points, who then beat the Bills, who then beat the Panthers 40-9. I think this is one of the avenues that the NFL has improved over college football in the past years. Don’t get me wrong, I love the roaring atmospheres and long Saturdays that come with college football, but at the same time, the blowouts just get a little boring. CFB has a much larger margin of victory for the winning teams and it takes away from the excitement. I just can’t get too happy about another Texas blowout against North Seminole State. The FBS vs FCS games in college football really take away from the draw. It just does not make sense; it’s like if high school football teams played JV occasionally just to mix up their schedule. There needs to be mandated games against teams out of conference to make sure that each part of the schedule is exciting. Another issue is the reward system for a weak strength of schedule. The CFB board constantly rewards teams with good records that come from weak competition. NIL and the portal have actually introduced a little more variability into the CFB, but the strength of different conferences just makes it seem like there are 4 different conferences with brief confederations for the playoffs and bowl games. College football has such an awesome atmosphere that the product needs to be improved. Another issue is geography. Simply put, college football is life in the south and more of an afterthought in the northeast. Unfortunately, it has not had the ability to engage the entire country recently. It is just very hard for a fan from Boston to tune into Ole Miss vs Alabama as it likely won’t affect the course of their team’s season whatsoever. What college needs to due is start taking notes from the NFL. In my opinion, the design of the NFL is immaculate. It seems that a team really has a chance to win every single game. It may be due to the quality of the players, but also due to structure. Divisions aren’t binded to one area like they aer in college, but instead they have a healthy dose of rivalry and diversity. For example, as a Panthers fan, I love the rivalry with the Bucs and Falcons, but it is not the only division I care about. The entire NFC is related and is important as well as the other conferences. The NFL feels much more like a connected network of competition rather than disjointed and arbitrary college conferences. Every NFL game I turn on, I know each team can usually win. There is just something special about watching the best athletes in the world compete against each other on the biggest stage. Simply put, this year, it’s every given Sunday that I enjoy watching.
