How to Win Your Next Gingerbread House Competition

What is the Best Gingerbread Technique?

Some of us see a gingerbread house competition as a fun activity with family while others see it as a time to reveal your true talent in the construction of the cookie abode. Whichever you are, here is a list of ways to elevate your architecture this holiday season. As a pro gingerbread house builder myself, this is a trustworthy list to inspire your holiday home.

  1. A creative roof

A key part of a gingerbread house that is guaranteed to win you the competition is a creative and realistic roof. Look for a food that can resemble a shingle of a roof such as cereal or almond halves. The key part that will blow the socks off your competition is to overlay the individual pieces of your roof so that it is unmistakably realistic. It makes the house look neater and covers more of the brown color from the gingerbread. If you want to take a more colorful route the roofs in the picture are a great option, specifically the smarties and chewy spree roof.

2. A green touch

For the creators of a more classic look, a touch of green will add to the timelessness of your chalet. You can wrap it in a circle to make a wreath or put it on the outside to create a miniature tree. Even better, it can be harvested from your own tree at home with a quick clipping of a branch, or, if you have a fake tree, rosemary from the fridge will work equally as well.

3. Well decorated walls
A great way to add some spice to your house is to make a creative wall. You can use jelly beans or kidney beans (as shown above) to simulate cobblestone and add to the aesthetics of your humble abode. Another option is to add some piping if you truly want to add an artistic touch. Although it can take some time, it is always creates the perfect snowy scene. Also, make sure you pipe the walls before you construct and glue them all together.

4. Landscaping on the lawn

Another quick and easy gingerbread tip is to add something to the base of you house. There can really be anything but a candy cane sled, marshmallow snowman, or maybe even a tree made of an ice cream cone are some great options. Also, adding a path leading from the door will add to the realistic aspects of your cookie chalet.

5. A dust of powdered sugar

If you decide to follow nothing on this list, at least use this one tip. Trust me, giving your gingerbread house a dust of powdered sugar over the top will ALWAYS make it better. Even if you have the worst house in the competition this trick might secure you a winning spot. Adding to both the realism and aesthetics, powdered sugar always boosts the look of your holiday architecture.
