What to Look Forward to at the Box Office in the First Half of 2019
2018 was a great year in cinema, with highly anticipated sequels for The Incredibles, Deadpool, and Fantastic Beasts. The superhero genre is still making headlines with Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther taking the top two spots for highest grossing movie of the year, but lets look to 2019 and what it has in store.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
Releasing February 8th
The first Lego Movie was surprisingly entertaining for a movie marketed for children. The twist towards the end with the child playing with his fathers Lego’s was both creative and heartfelt. The newly engaged Chris Pratt reprises his role as Emmet. Hopefully, The Second Part will be a good sequel.
Captain Marvel
Releasing March 8th
This is Marvel’s first film releasing this year, and will hopefully hold some clues for what happens in Aprils Avengers: Endgame. Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990’s with many callbacks to the culture of the time including Blockbuster and is the MCU’s first female superhero to receive a solo movie.
Us
Releasing March 22nd
There aren’t many details but this film is being written and directed by Jordan Peele as a follow up to the hit thriller Get Out. If it’s anything like Get Out, this film holds a lot of promise.
Dumbo
Releasing March 29th
This is a live action remake of the beloved 1941 cartoon about a flying elephant. What can I say? It’s Disney, it’s going to be good, but is it really going to be ground-breaking or revolutionary. Probably not.
Shazam
Releasing April 5th
This is DC’s response to Captain Marvel. Hopefully it will learn from the mistakes of DC’s past attempts at making decent movies. Coincidentally, the main character’s superhero alias is also Captain Marvel.
Avengers:Endgame
Releasing April 26th
This film has had over a decade of build up, and it may very well be the last time we get to see some of our favorite Avengers on the big screen, with Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Hemsworth’s contracts expiring this year without any talks of renewal. It’s got a lot of hype to live up to.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu
Releasing May 10th
It’s interesting how this film chose one of the franchises most obscure characters to lead their first foray into live-action movies, and with the amazing talent of Ryan Reynolds, this film could be good. We will see…
Aladdin
Releasing May 24th
Another Disney live-action reboot of a beloved animated classic. Fresh Prince’s Will Smith plays the genie. Once again, because it is Disney, it will be good, but not exceptional.
Godzilla: King of Monsters
Releasing May 31st
If big monsters destroying buildings is your thing, this is the movie for you. This movie has almost all of the Godzilla universes biggest monsters duking it out in cities.
So these are the films to look forward to until school let’s out. Another season of films with enough excitement and potential to empty your wallet.
