Super Bowl Commercial Recap

Where were the Clydesdales?

Super Bowl 52 was last Sunday, February 4th.

Every year I do not look forward to the football in the Super Bowl; I look forward to all of the creative commercials and the half time show. This year was no exception. Unlike other TV programs, while I was watching the game I was hoping for a commercial break. The commercials and half time show of the 52nd Super Bowl were slightly disappointing, and my classmate Eliot Leadem (12) agrees saying, “I don’t think the commercials lived up to the hype from last year. There was little emotional appeal…no Budweiser Clydesdales:(Even the Dirty Dancing commercial with Odell Beckham and Eli Manning was no match for dogs and horses.”

I did, however, enjoy some of the commercials this year and I would like to share with you my favorites.

1.) NFL Touchdown Celebrations to Come: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUoD-gPDahw

This commercial is an almost identical reenactment of the famous Final Show dance performed by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing…including the lift!

2.) Hyundai Ref to the Rescue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OblwxqKPyLg

In this fun commercial there is a children’s soccer game going on at the time of the Super Bowl. The referee takes the opportunity to call red cards on all the players to eject them. At first the commercial leads you to believe that the ref is being unfair until the end when everyone rushes home to watch the Super Bowl.

3.) The Bud Light Bud Knight

This Bud Light commercial was not lacking any typical Bud Light element including the iconic “Dilly Dilly.” In the commercial there was a fierce battle going on with one side obviously losing. This was until the “Bud Knight” came to the rescue and saved the day while everyone cheered, “Dilly Dilly!”

These next two commercial favorites go hand in hand. Doritos and Mountain Dew are owned by the same company, and the commercials show not only the contrasting ICE and BLAZE names, but also how these two snacks go so great together.

4.)Doritos Blaze Game of Thrones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNzzJzdgUto

This commercial was for all the Game of Thrones lovers out there. It featured Peter Dinklage who plays Tyrion in the show rapping to “Look at Me Now.”

5.)Mountain Dew Ice with Morgan Freeman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eKYR_iL5eU

The Doritos Blaze commercial was then contrasted with this Mountain Dew Ice commercial where Morgan Freeman lip synced to “Get Your Freak On.”

Super Bowl 52 was full of good football, commercials, and an amazing halftime show by Justin Timberlake. We now have to wait a whole year until the next set of great commercials come out.
