After an undefeated season, The Academic Magnet Quiz bowl team had a nail biter of a first match Thursday, March 19th that ended in a 49-49 tie with Lucy Beckham. They won the tie breaker match 61-27. The tied match must have lit a fire under the team! Liam Rohrbacher was named the MVP for the 2025-2026 Season.Then on to state on Saturday!
The Academic Magnet Academic Quiz Bowl Team made AMHS history Saturday, March 21st and took home the first place South Carolina state championship title at the University of SC in a field of the 24 best quiz bowl teams from across the state!
Congratulations A team: Cameron Erde, Liam Rohrbacher, Aaron Zhu, & James Oliver!
The team went 5-0 in their preliminary bracket earning a spot in the playoff bracket where they went 2-1, with wins against the SC Governor’s School for Science and Math and Dorman High. Even with one loss against Heathwood Hall, the team won their playoff bracket and advanced to the Championship round, facing off in a best-of-3 match series against the other playoff winner Southside High School.
In the Championship Round, they lost their first match to Southside 240-320, but then came back stronger, winning 380-300 and immediately entering a third and final sudden death round where they fought for their win and secured it defeating Southside 405-235!
With a high scoring, powerful performance Liam Rohrbacher also earned a top 10 individual award in the tournament!
Academic Magnet’s B team made up of Samuel Foppe, Ethan Wang, Tobias Wilson, and Hillary Chang also had an impressive finish in the tournament with a final record of 3-5 and a strong team performance overall, ending their run with their highest scoring match in a 195-65 win against Clinton High School. Ethan got 22 total tossups and Tobias 19! They were energized at the chance to visit USC, compete against elite teams, and cheer on their teammates in the high pressure Championship round!
