Out of all the stupid jokes and trends we saw in the year 2025, a good amount of them should not be carried over into the year 2026. Here they are:
Kirkification
The wild trend of using AI image generation to merge the face of Charlie Kirk into random videos was funny the first couple of times it was done, but it eventually became impossible to open Instagram or TikTok without seeing his face. This was made even more common with the addition of the song ‘We Are Charlie Kirk’. This song, which was presumably AI generated, was also everywhere. I am honestly tired of seeing this overdone trend all over social media, which is why it really shouldn’t be brought into the new year.
Blue Collar Spongebob
Very similar to the aforementioned Charlie Kirk meme, this one involves the cartoon character Spongebob. This trend began in early September 2025, and has maintained relevance since then. This trend is also frequently accompanied by a song, called the ‘Blue-Collar Anthem’.
The lyrics for the song are as follows:
‘Well, my collar’s blue, but my neck is red
I been workin’ like a dog, just to keep my family fed’
This song is honestly terrible, and the Instagram reels using it became annoying to see and be sent after like a month.
Italian Brainrot
The Italian Brainrot trend that began in mid 2025 was by far the strangest of the 2025 online sensations. It made use of weird, AI generated characters based on Italian phrases, such as Tralalero Tralala (a shark wearing three blue shoes), Chimpanzini Bananini (a green chimpanzee in a banana), and Tung Tung Tung Sahur (A wooden cylinder with four limbs wielding a wooden stick). These characters, along with others, spawned a large amount of AI generated videos and songs, and absolutely none of it made sense.
Six Siven (67)
Finally, you all knew it was coming, but the six seven trend should NOT be brought into 2026. This is by far the most annoying trend that happened at all this year. The main reason for this is that it has been around and circulating online since early 2025, making it by far the longest lasting of this year’s online trends. It was made even more annoying when little kids began saying it in an attempt to be funny. Even at last night’s Clemson v. South Carolina college basketball game, when Clemson made a free throw to have 67 points, the camera panned to countless kids doing the viral hand gesture that accompanies the saying. The Oxford University Press even chose ‘67’ as their word of the year for 2025, cementing the lasting legacy of the trend on the English language. Hopefully now that it has an official dictionary definition, it can be left in the dust for better things in the year 2026.
