Clash Royale has recently risen abruptly in popularity, especially among male students at Academic Magnet, beginning around the end of last school year. This isn’t the first time Clash Royale has suddenly experienced a popularity spike, as it has happened two other times in the game’s history, occurring in 2016 and 2019, respectively. This time around, however, the game’s popularity wasn’t due to a new release or update, but rather it was tied to content creation. Content creators such as Jynxzi and StableRonaldo, as well as top players such as Ryley and Mohamed Light, have continued to make YouTube content about the Clash Royale, leading many new and returning players to begin playing. This new wave of players has pushed the monthly player count of Clash Royale above 60 million players, making it easily one of the most played iPhone games ever, and possibly the most played of 2025.
What is it? Clash Royale, developed by Supercell and released globally in March of 2016, is a mobile strategy game that blends elements of card games, tower defense, and real-time multiplayer combat. Set in the same universe as its predecessor, Clash of Clans (2012), which was an equally popular game in the 2010s, Clash Royale quickly rose to popularity due to its fast-paced gameplay and competitive nature. Supercell, the developers of Clash Royale and Clash of Clans, supported the game with frequent updates, adding new cards, tournaments, and even a professional league. There are also 121 unique cards for players to use and experiment with, affording players great versatility. A battle deck consists of 8 cards, so with the 121 cards currently in the game, that means there are 899,749,479,915 different possible decks in the game. While it saw initial praise and success, the game faced criticism for its greedy monetization strategies. The game often requires hundreds of dollars to upgrade cards fully; if you want to skip the months it would likely take.
How it works: In Clash Royale, two players battle in real time using a costume deck of 8 cards, representing troops, buildings, and spells. The battlefield has three lanes and three towers per side. The goal is to destroy more of your opponents’ towers within a 3-minute match, with overtime and a subsequent tiebreaker if needed. Players spend elixir to place down cards, which requires strategic timing and placement. Cards come in different rarities and can be leveled up to a maximum of level 15 currently. The game features various modes, such as 1v1, ranked, 2v2, challenges, clan wars, and many more. The inclusion of clans allows for player community and assistance, as well as friendly battles. Supercell currently provides regular updates and seasonal content, keeping the game fresh.
Like in most games, mobile or not, certain play-styles often dominate the player-base. In this regard, Clash Royale is no different, as a select few cards are usually used by the majority of players. Cards such as Mega Knight, Hog Rider, and Royal Recruits are currently dominating the meta, mainly due to their ease of use in many different decks. Mega Knight deals heavy area damage, making him very useful for dealing with your opponent’s large group of troops. Hog Rider targets the opponent’s tower over any other troops, making it easy to cause damage against your opponent. Royal Recruits are often considered the easiest card to play in the game, as placing it deploys 7 shielded troops in a phalanx (line) formation across the arena. These three cards and their associated play-styles are some of the most prominent cards in Clash Royale right now, and one of the authors of this article actually uses one of them.
The Dark Side: Clash Royale continues to face criticism in recent years for its increasingly aggressive and greedy monetization practices. The game initially provided a fair balance between free to play and pay to win back in the early days of 2016, but Supercell has gradually introduced a system that favors those who choose to spend money on the game. Features like pass royale, card evolutions, and elite level upgrades often lock out power abilities behind paywalls, making it next to impossible for free-to-play players to keep up. In fact, to fully max out a Clash Royale account, it can cost up to $20,000. The game isn’t all pay-to-win, however, as the aforementioned card evolutions are available to players for free, but to a lesser extent. The evolutions of the Archers, Electro Dragon, Wizard, and Tesla cards were all given to players for free, simply by playing the game. Players can also receive card evolutions from random drops, making it possible to get any card evolution in the game without paying a dime. It is also possible to get any single card you want in the game without spending money, but it could take a while depending on your luck and skill level.

This graph shows Clash Royale’s monthly revenue vs. downloads. Here, it can be seen that the monthly downloads have remained the same over the course of the last 3 years, while the revenue has remained astronomically higher. This shows that with a constant stream of players, Clash Royale generates extreme amounts of money. Although it has shown a dip after December 2021, showing that people are less interested in spending money, possibly due to the push of pay-to-win transactions.
