Hi Magnet! The chilly weather has indicated that we are leaving summer and entering Autumn. Since Fall has just begun on September 22nd, I asked Magnet students what their favorite fall things were, whether it was traditions, the weather, or the holidays. I sent out a survey asking students their top three favorites and received many unique answers.
The number one thing that Magnet students are looking forward to for this season is cool weather! In the recent survey, 45 students expressed that cool weather is what they are most excited about this fall. Many shared their enthusiasm for the crisp, refreshing air that signals the transition from summer’s heat to autumn’s embrace. Another common comment was “fewer bugs” in the fall! The thought of cozy sweaters, colorful leaves, and the anticipation of seasonal activities like apple picking and bonfires added to their excitement. One student summed up this love for cooler weather by saying “The weather gets better and it’s sort of a happy medium.” This collective sentiment highlights how the temperature change brings a shift in nature and fosters a sense of community and celebration among friends and family during this season.
Many students revealed that they are most excited about the beloved pumpkin spice flavor this fall. The seasonal staple has become synonymous with autumn, evoking warmth and nostalgia. Many students eagerly anticipate the return of pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks, baked goods, and even candles. All embody the season’s cozy spirit. Some examples students mentioned are “pumpkin flavored pastries and cinnamon doughnuts.” This collective enthusiasm reflects a shared love for the flavor and highlights how specific tastes can create a sense of comfort and joy as they gather with friends to savor the delights of fall.
Eighteen students expressed that fall outfits and clothes are why they’re ready for autumn. With the arrival of cooler temperatures, many are looking forward to layering cozy sweaters, stylish jackets, and vibrant scarves that reflect the rich hues of autumn. Charleston’s weather does not allow a long time to wear a sweater due to the sweltering heat, as one student expressed how excited they are to “wear sweaters without sweating a lot.” Demonstrating personal style through various textures and patterns brings a sense of creativity and anticipation. For these students, fall fashion is not just about staying warm; it’s a chance to embrace the season’s aesthetic and celebrate the wardrobe change that marks a fresh chapter in the year.
In the recent survey, over 15 students shared that their excitement for fall largely revolves around NFL and college football. As the season kicks off, these students eagerly anticipate cheering for their favorite teams and proudly wearing jerseys. The thrill of game days, whether spent at stadiums or gathered with friends to watch from home, creates a lively atmosphere filled with companionship and competition. Fall signifies the return of exciting matchups, tailgating traditions, and the shared joy of sports that unite communities. Similarly, high school football games are also a source of thrill for high school students nationwide. The FNL, or Friday Night Lights, is a classic American experience that is joyful for athletes and fans alike. A spirited leader expressed their excitement when they said, “I love all the spirit leaders, and we are all very devoted, having extra fun at football games this year. I really enjoy getting dressed up and being spirited, especially during spirit week leading up to homecoming when my spirit is at its prime.”
Halloween has proven to be a source of elation this fall. Halloween is one of the most popular holidays in the United States, and one student even described it as “One of the greatest holidays of all time.” As the spooky season approaches, the thrill of selecting and creating the perfect costume allows students to express their imagination and be creative. From classic costumes like ghosts and witches to unique and innovative outfits, students look forward to showcasing their unique styles at Halloween parties and trick-or-treating. This enthusiasm highlights the excitement of dressing up and participating in fun events, competitions, and shared activities.
Many also mentioned that they look forward to the fair this autumn season. The fair is a very thrilling fall festival that unites the neighborhood as an energetic environment of different games and rides. The fair has typically enjoyable activities, tasty snacks and treats, and local displays of agriculture and craft. It offers families different attractions, including carnival rides and games, a petting zoo, and live entertainment for all ages. The fair has decorations and activities that are very festive for autumn, all related to how farmers celebrate the harvest season, making it nostalgic and memorable. In short, it’s an exciting blend of excitement, community, and fall charm that everybody eagerly awaits every year! One student described the fair and said, “Nothing beats the smell of fried food. One of the greatest inventions of fall ever.”
Another unique answer was “Club Soccer Season” from our athletic Raptors. Similarly, many students are just as excited about basketball and girls’ tennis seasons! Many individuals described fall’s comfort, explaining how they look forward to “curling up in a blanket and watching a movie outside.” Fright night was also a popular answer. Although one student mentioned how the prices have increased dramatically, it is worth it “for the screams.” I would have to agree, as many of my friends and I have been frequent fright night-goers, but now the price is up to $70 with a fast pass. In my opinion, this is not worth it. One wholesome student explained how excited they were to “make new friends at school” and how sweet it was! Finally, one particularly excited Raptor described their love for Starbucks pumpkin chai; their responses to the survey were as follows: “STARBUCKS PUMPKIN CHAI” and “THE COLD FOAM ON TOP OF THE PUMPKIN CHAI.” I relate very much to this comment, as this fall drink at Starbucks is also one of my favorite things about the season!
Thank you for reading. I hope this article made you as excited about Autumn as these Magnet students!
