Each Month as a Song
My expert music critic opinion
January
January, the Monday of the year. What could be better than a little pick me up from The Neighbourhood? This song is the perfect combo of relaxing but still a jam. Also it has an amazing outro. This song is also just a good listen for rainy days and early mornings, which I correlate January with.
February
February is always my favorite month of the year, but I may be biased because it’s my birthday month. Even if it’s not yours, who doesn’t love Aquarius season? In addition, there’s semi, Valentine’s Day, and Groundhog Day. Lot’s to celebrate! I picked “Speak Now” by the one and only Ms. Swift. It’s the perfect upbeat throwback to put you in a good mood. Also, we will randomly get 70 degree days in February, so this is the perfect song to put on the car and drive with the windows down.
March
March and I have some beef. March seems like it should be the beginning of spring, but in reality it just seems to rain all month. I chose “Sis” by Clairo to represent the cloudy and humid weather I associate with this month. The sleepy ambiance of the guitar in this song is perfect for a tired and gray month.
April
Ah April, the beginning of actual Spring, and Prom season! So much to enjoy. I chose “21 Questions” by the one and only 50 Cent in order to celebrate the season. Always a classic, 50 cent delivers impeccable vibes with this song. This is a 100% jam, and it’s impossible to not be in a good mood when you’re listening to this.
May
May is always burnout season for me. I’m required to drag myself to the Academic Magnet in steaming hot temperatures in order to satisfy the District’s insatiable thirst for student attendance. I chose “Picture Me Rollin’” by Tupac so I can picture myself rollin’ on out of school and onto the beach.
June
Sweet sweet summer is finally here. June is a month of freedom, beach days, and wiping out on Folly Beach. For June, I needed a song that smelled like SunBum coconut sunscreen, felt like wind flying through your hair, and sandy feet. I chose “Malibu” by Miley Cyrus to accurately represent this vibe.
July
July, again like June, is a classic summer month. I needed a song to help aid the crushing humidity and heat that is always present this month. I chose “This Life” by Vampire Weekend to be my song of the month. My dad always puts this song on in the car when we’re driving on a summer road trip, so I thought it’d be perfect for July. Also family friendly, so you can play it at the Fourth of July festivities.
August
August is definitely the Sunday of the year. I have to say, I am not always the biggest fan of August. School starts, and I spend two weeks cramming all of my summer work in. I chose “the Louvre” by Lorde, because it creates the perfect late night ambiance for my midnight breaks from cramming.
September
September is good. So many sports seasons are starting (Cross Country!!! <3<3) and we all get to see each other after summer break. I usually am in the routine of going to school again by September, and it is nice to be able to go to the beach on the weekends. September is a good month. I chose “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” by Blu Cantrell to commemorate the month. Another perfect throwback, and I will listen to this one when I’m on a run. It’s probably the only thing that keeps me from walking.
October
October is another elite month. Fall is obviously the best season, and Halloween is just around the corner. To keep with the eerie vibe of the month, I decided to choose “Dealer” by Lana del Rey. The vocals on this track are chilling and eerily beautiful.
November
For November, I chose “Moving On” by Sarah and the Sundays. This is just a classic catchy indie song for the day when it’s chilly but sunny out. It’s 100% the type of song you can listen to and jam even if you don’t know all the words.
December
What could I choose other than something by the king of Christmas music himself, Michael Bublé. “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas” is simply a classic that cannot be beat, and Mr. Bublé serenading me is the only thing I want under my tree on Christmas morning.
