Last week we sent out a survey to the entire Raptor student body in an attempt to examine their media consumption habits (i.e. preferred method of watching T.V., favorite shows, amount of time spent watching per day etc.). We received over 60 responses (10% of the raptor student community), and the results are as follows:

  1. Grade:

With the majority of our responses coming from 9th grades, this survey may be somewhat biased towards the younger ages at the school, but overall the responses were 41% freshman, 19.7% sophomores, 13.1% juniors (ouch), and 26.2% seniors.

2. Amount watched per day:

57% of respondents reported watching TV/media for 30 min to 1.5 hours per day.

23% reported watching TV/media for 1.5-3 hours

9.8% reported 0-30 min.

9.8% reported 3+ hours.

3. Preferred method of consumption:

The most popular media outlets were 42% YouTube and 46% Netflix, but responses also included Hulu, Cable, HBO Max, and Youtube TV.

4. Opinion on Netflix Originals:

From a scale of 1-5 (1 being hate them and 5 being obsessed with them) the responses were:

1 4.9%

2 14.8%

3 37.7%

4 36.1%

5 6.6%

5. Do you ever watch Cable TV?

41.7% “from time to time”

31.7% “never”

15% “I’m more of a computer user”

11.7% “yes all the time”

6. TV or Movies?

54.1% TV

39.3% Movies

6.6% Neither

7. Were you a Disney, Nickelodeon, or Cartoon Network kid?

59% Disney

32.8% Nickelodeon

32.8% Cartoon Network

14.8% None

8. Favorite Childhood show? (free response :P)

Some popular responses for this one included Phineas and Ferb, SpongeBob, Hannah Montana, and Avatar the Last Airbender.

9. Lastly, we gave our respondents free reign to tell us anything they wanted about T.V., some of our favorite quotes include:

“I really admire works that clearly had a lot of work put into them. Specifically, some people dislike or don’t seem to care for anime, but I (along with many others) find many series to be outstanding. Sure, there are some cheeky shows. But the highlight of the genre are those which are filled with raw emotion behind the recordings of the voice actors, or the talent that is seen in the art throughout the thousands of works. My final point is to consider watching anime, and not find it undesirable to watch only because some others perceive it that way after viewing the “bad apples” of the genre.”

“It’s very much a cliche, but we are truly living in the golden age of television. It’s very upsetting that all this T.V is distributed across like 719837347920473 streaming services!”

“So wack”

“yummy”

“Please, for the love of all that is holy, stop the reboots”

“If I’m binge watching I’m about to go on a mental spiral “
