This Week in Sports

This week, although not being huge in sports, still has some pretty exciting events that will impact the respective sports. This list is compiled of the biggest sports news in the past week.

  1. The Houston Texans Craziness
  • As most know, the Houston Texans organization has gone through some tough times which includes but is not limited to driving Deshaun Watson and other star Texans players away from their organization and having to fire their longtime head coach and general manager, Bill O’Brien. Let’s look at what went wrong. Although O’Brien won the AFC South 4 years out of his six years in Houston, the big problem is that he simply could not manage the talent he had on his team. When he had Deandre Hopkins, Deshaun Watson, and a decent defense, he still could not produce any good playoff wins and was never a real contender in the league. Although Houston has never really gotten past the classic (re)building stage, they should be focusing on acquiring good talent instead of throwing it away. The Houston fan base went up in flames when Bill O’Brien traded away Deandre Hopkins to the Cardinals, and rightfully so. The Texans received David Johnson and a few draft picks. With the new head coach, David Culley, the next question is, if Deshaun Watson ends up somewhere else, how can Culley actually rebuild? He’s gonna have a lot of pressure to turn Houston into a contender but it will definitely take a few years, especially if Watson leaves.
  1. NFL Conference Championships
  • These conference championship games last Sunday were super exciting. The best game out of the two was for sure the Buccaneers and the Packers. It was a classic legendary quarterback matchup who both have some good offenses to go with them. However, one key difference to note is that Aaron Rodgers has been with the Packers for decades while Tom Brady is in his first and possibly last year with the Buccaneers. Aaron Rodgers has studs including Aaron Jones and Allen Lazard. Tom Brady has Antonio Brown, Leonard Fournette, and Chris Godwin. Both quarterbacks started off strong in their matchup game but especially Tom Brady. It was questionable if the Buccaneers were going to be able to withstand the cold but Brady obviously was able to stay poised under center as he ended up taking the Bucs to a 21-10 lead by the end of the first half. Despite this early lead by the Bucs, the game quickly turned into a shootout in the second half resulting in two Packers fumbles which could have cost them the game. However, the Packers offense was firing in the second half and just made a few wrong playcalls near the end which might have done them in. Final score: 31-26 Buccaneers. The second conference championship game that happened last Sunday was the Chiefs versus the Bills. This game to me was a lot less exciting as opposed to the other game but it still had some good action. The Bills starting lineup includes stars like Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs, and Cole Beasley. The Chiefs starting lineup is packed with stars like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, etc. Despite the clear talent difference, the Bills took an early lead to go up to 9-0 in the first quarter. The Bills offense was driving down the field with momentum while the Chiefs just looked like they couldn’t really get much going against a tough Buffalo defense. Things quickly turned around, however. After the first quarter, the Chiefs’ offense started clicking and their whole offense was getting involved. Mahomes was throwing dimes to a variety of receivers to drive them down the field time and time again. Travis Kelce is just unreal also. He had 13 receptions for over a hundred yards along with two touchdowns. He is a third down completion machine and almost never drops a pass. Although Josh Allen got some things going on offense near the end, they are never beating a hot Chiefs team. Final Score; 38-24 Chiefs.
  1. PGA championship
  • The 2022 PGA championship was set to be taking place in Bedminster, New Jersey at former president, Donald Trump’s golf course. This week the event has been pulled from happening at his golf course and the new location is still to be determined. This action is based off of the riot at the Capitol building a few weeks ago where the blame has been largely put on Donald Trump. PGA officials say that it would have been detrimental to the PGA reputation to hold any sort of event with the name Donald Trump attached in any way. Many believe that the focus of the event would not entirely be on the actual golf, but the fact that it was at former President Donald Trump’s estate who had supposedly caused chaos in the Capitol.
