Clothing questions and more.

Riley and Andrew, well-dressed as always.

Although we all love to look good once in a while, not all of us know how. We decided to track down some of the best-dressed students at Magnet and gain some valuable insight into the fashion world.

We first decided to catch up with Riley Haas.

Riley in one of her favorite prints.

“What has been your favorite fashion trend of 2019? Of all time?”

  • Animal prints. Let the animal instincts take over with wild prints–rawr. I love to unleash my inner jungle cat with some cheetah, but some days if I am feeling calm I would go with brown cow or maybe zebra. Snake is also kinda cool. Mom jeans are the best trend of all time. Mom jeans, profoundly uncool and suddenly very cool, are the best thing to ever be created with the high waist, straight leg, and relaxed fit. And that’s on BDG.

“Favorite brand of shoes?”

  • Sam Edelman. He has that top notch quality with that affordability. Comfortable, versatile, and fashion forward. Thank you, Nordstrom Rack!

“Preferred shirt length and why?”

  • Cropped is superior. Do not wear it to work, a job interview, weddings, funerals, or dinner with your boyfriend’s family. Do wear it everywhere else. Keep it cool and edgy with a crop top and mom jeans.

“Do you think makeup is a part of the outfit? Why?”

  • 100% yes. Bright matte eyeshadow is literally clothing. Bright hot pink eyeshadow is my guilty pleasure.

“What are your thoughts on the importance of earrings?’’

  • Earrings are the most important accessory you can have. They always add balance and shape to your face while enhancing and completing your outfit. If you have big ears, you should avoid long earrings–it may draw unwanted attention; however, big, round earrings would be perfect for you. Funky earrings are the coolest addition to an outfit. If you need to see an example, refer to Rosie Booker’s ear.

“How do you pick your outfits?”

  • Step One: Check the temperature.
  • Step Two: Check effort level.
  • Step Three: Open closet.
  • Step Four: Stare for twenty minutes, approximately.
  • Step Five: Try on an outfit that speaks to you that day.
  • Step Six: Hate that outfit, throw it on the floor, and try on a different one.
  • Step Seven: Repeat steps five and six as necessary.
  • Step Eight: Fall in love with the same thing you wore like a week ago.
  • Step Nine: Pick shoes to match said outfit. This will most likely be Filas even though there are like ten other viable options.
  • Step Ten: Add those funky earrings and bright eyeshadow. Done.

“Who is your fashion inspiration?”

  • I don’t know if this answers this, but Lily James in Mamma Mia 2. All I want is to be Lily James prancing through the orange tree farm in her long flowy orange skirt, cute cropped navy blue t-shirt, and butterfly pendant necklace. ICONIC.

“What is one article of clothing you hate?’’

  • Biker shorts. Thank you to the Kardashians for bringing back the ugliest trend I have ever seen… Really, thanks. I love it when paired with cropped hoodies and tees…not. And if you are wearing velvet bike shorts, you have made my hit list.

“What are your thoughts on unregulated capitalism?”

  • I do not like unregulated capitalism. I think it would actually be scary… With capitalism, just like in any competition, there are winners and losers. However, with unregulated capitalism, the biggest economic winners are likely to keep winning and losers are likely to keep losing, leading to the monopolistic power of a few individuals with all the wealth residing in the hands at the top. Market regulation is necessary to continue the delicate balancing act that maintains our fundamental ideals of equality, which includes economic equality.

“What American political party do you align with the most?’’

  • Liberal. Mr. Trump impeachment please.

After talking with Riley, we moved on to Andrew DeArellano to get a different perspective.

Andrew wearing authentically thrifted clothes.

“What has been your favorite fashion trend of 2019? Of all time?”

  • Looser fit jeans with big cuffs for 2019 are definitely nice, but they have been rising in popularity since before this year. My favorite trend of all time is the thrifted look for sure.

“Favorite brand of shoes?”

  • Nike just because of the rich history and especially because of the running and retro elements.

“Preferred shirt length and why?”

  • Any longer shirt because you can either wear it loose and flowy or tuck it in depending on that day’s vibes.

“How do you pick your outfits?”

  • I check the weather the night before and then think of it while I go to sleep. If I don’t plan ahead I take forever in the morning.

“Who is your fashion inspiration?”

  • My sister was the first person to open me up to dressing well, but since then I have really just drawn a lot of my style inspiration from Instagram.

“What is one article of clothing you hate?’’

  • I really dislike any clothing that is designed to look thrifted, like stuff from Urban Outfitters. It makes it too easy and removes the originality from the process.

“Does the hair change the outfit?”

  • Absolutely. I sometimes struggle to dress up nicely even though I really like to just because I feel like my hair kinda ruins the whole look.

“What are your thoughts on unregulated capitalism?”

  • I think capitalism can be helpful to provide motivation for hard work, but at the same time big companies need regulations, especially environmentally. Our country needs to switch from an equality-based system to an equity-based one.

“What American political party do you align with the most?’’

  • Democratic.

“What’s your favorite movie?”

  • La La Land is up there for me, but I also really like Pulp Fiction.
