It’s finally that time of the year again! December is upon us, and for most people, that means lights, trees, and holiday cheer, but for some of us, it means a whole lot of Instagram stories and spreadsheets. Spotify has released this year’s Spotify Wrapped, a collection of everyone’s music statistics and listening histories, and so have all the other major streaming services. I sent out a poll to the student body, and I received 50 responses, so let’s dive in and look at what magnet students are listening to!
Minutes Listened
Spotify Wrapped and its various iterations inform users about the amount of music they listened to throughout the year, and some people’s numbers are extremely high! The average magnet student listened to 39,000 minutes of music this year, which seems really high to me for an average student. The lowest amount I was told (that wasn’t a joke response) was from Lance Campbell (11), who said “10 hours,” which converts to 600 minutes. The longest amount, sadly, was one of the only TWO responses that requested their answer not to be reported to the talon, so I sadly can’t say, but the second most was from Eli Adams (10), who had 120,000 minutes listened. His top artist was Jane Remover, and it’s clear that he listened to a LOT of her music because his top song was by Jane Remover AND his second most listened to artist was Jane Remover’s alternate stage name “Venturing.” I think the takeaway from this section is that we have some dedicated fans here at Magnet.
Top Five Artists
The data point that most people look forward to seeing in their Spotify Wrapped is their top 5 artists. It’s very interesting to see everyone’s favorite artists, and I can report from my responses that we have a great amount of musical diversity here at Magnet. The third most popular artist among magnet students was a 4-way tie between Future, Clairo, Laufey, and Future, each being on 5 different students’ top 5. In second place was another tie between Tyler, the Creator and Drake, which is very shocking to me since Drake was my personal prediction for first place; however, they both made it onto 6 people’s top 5s. But the most shocking of all is first place, which NO ONE could possibly guess, being Alice in Chains! It’s not even a tie; Alice in Chains is the only artist that ended up on 7 people’s top 5s. This is a very strange list for the most popular artists, since only ONE of these artists is in the top 10 for the most popular artists. Overall, I’m very surprised by the outcome of this one.
Conclusion
Overall, I think that we learned from this year’s Spotify Wrapped that our school is full of interesting people. Magnet’s music taste ranges from hyperpop superfans to Heavy Metal Fanatics!
