With the winter coming up, many of y’all will begin searching for TV shows to watch. Whether you’re alone or with friends and family, all of these recommendations are great. I will make sure to include all genres: drama, action, suspense, and comedy. These are all great choices to consider when selecting a TV show to watch. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
“How I Met Your Mother” is a great show to watch with anyone or by yourself. It takes place in the great city of New York. Ted Mosby is the main character, and it follows his life as he tries to find a wife. His first attempt at love is when he meets Robin in the bar beneath his apartment. Immediately, he is star struck. His best friend, Barney, makes an attempt to play the game that they call “HHHHAAAAVVVEEE you met Ted,” and this gets the attention of Robin. She then strikes up a conversation with Ted. They hit it off and begin to date each other. Robin is new in town and Ted introduces her to two of his friends, Lily and Marshall. The five of them become the best of friends. The show follows their lives and all of their many different personalities. Robin is from Canada and moved to New York to try and become a famous news anchor. She starts at a small local news joint where they give her pointless news stories. She feels greatly undervalued, but she stays there despite these feelings. She continues to pursue her career and it ends up paying off for her and she becomes a very successful and famous news anchor. So much so that her face appears on the side of buses and on billboards. Marshall is from Minnesota and met Ted in college when the two of them were roommates. He dreams of becoming a lawyer and is in law-school at the start of the show. He is studying hard to pass the bar exam. Through all of his troublesome school, he remains with his girlfriend Lily. Lily wants to become an artist. She adds a lot of comedic effects to the show and also plays a very emotional role for everybody. They seem to be the perfect couple, and they even get engaged. That is until later in the engagement when something terrible happens that leaves Marshall in despair. They still pursue each other and become the couple that Ted yearns to be like. Barney is a lifelong bachelor. He does not agree with the same idea of Ted that he needs to find a wife and start a life with them. He lives his own life and tries to get Ted to do the same. This is a top tier show and everyone that I know who has watched it has agreed that it is definitely worth the watch.
This next show is a recommendation from one of our own teachers here at the school. Ms. Shifflette told us in English class that “The Last Kingdom” is a great show. She was correct. We were given this recommendation because we were reading the book “Beowulf,” and it has to deal with the Danes and the Saxons. “The Last Kingdom” is the same. It follows the great warrior Uthued and how he battles with being born a Saxon but raised by Danes. He fights for both sides throughout his years. He serves alongside the great King Alfred, who is a real person, and his son as well. I have not finished the show yet, but I am on the last season right now. I highly recommend this show. Plus, for anyone who is going to take English 4, this would give you a great head start on your knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon era.
Sticking with the British theme, the next show will have you on the edge of your seat for all six seasons. “Peaky Blinders” is loosely based on real events that take place in Birmingham, England, after the first World War. It follows the main character, Thomas Shelby, and his brothers, who form a gang and are constantly seeking out their next target to feud with. This inherently increases their wealth by stealing from them and gaining more influence. It has been a while since I have watched this one, but I remember being very intrigued with every episode. It is great to binge during a couple of rainy weekends. Once you start this show it will be hard to stop watching because every episode ends in suspense. It takes you back in time and makes you feel transported into a time when the city streets were lawless and the officials in government could get paid off easily. The part that the English government plays in their schemes grows greater as their popularity grows. They are extremely dedicated to their craft; in fact, Thomas Shelby, the leader, ends up running for and even getting elected into Parliament. I highly recommend this one.
For the last show, I want to end on a happy note. “Brooklyn 99” is a hilarious comedy that everyone can watch. As insinuated by the title, it takes place in Brooklyn, New York and follows the 99th precinct in their efforts to stop crime in their area. Andy Samberg and Terry Cruise play some of the lead roles. There are many laughs throughout the entire series. It is the perfect show to put on when eating your dinner or just spending time with your family because it is very light-hearted and the characters in the series are very likable.
All of these shows are great in their own ways. Coming from someone who has seen all of them, my personal favorite has to be the “Peaky Blinders.” I will probably go back and re-watch it because it is so good. I recommend all of them, but I have to say that as addictive as these shows might be, school work is still very important and comes first. But when you find the time to do so, you should check these out on Netflix. Hopefully you will enjoy them as much as I did!
