Emma Miars went to Sullivan’s Island Elementary and Moultrie for middle school. She lives on Isle of Palms and has a younger brother, George, and a younger sister, Caroline. Emma has skied, surfed, and played tennis her whole life. Emma’s dream school is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is so happy she ended up at Magnet and is grateful for all of the friends she has made! I asked her these questions to get deeper into her life and her experience here at Magnet.
How has your academic experience been so far in high school? How is it different from freshman year?
So far, this year at Magnet has been much harder than last year when I was a freshman. I have much more homework and harder classes.
What subjects or classes are your favorite this year and why?
My favorite subject is Psychology, because I think it is very interesting to learn about the human brain and how it works.
What’s your biggest challenge in school this year?
My biggest challenge this year has been staying on top of all of my homework from my classes and getting it done in a timely manner.
What goals are you setting for yourself in your remaining high school years?
A goal I have for myself for the rest of the year is to keep up my grades.
Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you think everyone should know?
A lesson I have learned at Magnet is to make sure you stay on top of your work so it does not all get piled up at the end of the quarter.
What extracurricular activities/sports are you involved in this year?
This year I played on the tennis team and participated in LLS.
What’s your favorite thing to do outside of school?
On the weekend I like to spend time with my friends.
How do you think the sophomore year is different socially compared to freshman year?
Sophomore year I met new people that I didn’t know freshman year.
What does a typical weekend look like for you? Do you spend more time with friends or family?
What advice would you give to freshmen just starting their high school journey?
Advice I would give to freshmen would be to have an open mind about school and meet new people.
What are your plans for next year, and do you have any career aspirations you’re exploring?
For next year I plan to get an internship. I would like to be a lawyer when I graduate.

If I could change one thing about high school at magnet, I would like to be able to have my phone during school.
What’s your favorite thing about being a sophomore?
My favorite thing about being a sophomore is not yet having the stress about looking at colleges yet.
