Our idea of a perfect school morning is an early morning workout class followed by a delicious breakfast! This ideal combination, spent with your friends, makes you not only feel more productive but also makes the school day a little more bearable.
We usually will go to a 5:30 am or 6 am Works yoga class or Works spin class but occasionally we will go on a morning run together. These classes make you feel energized and proud of yourself. If you want to try The Works but do not know where to start, I would recommend signing up for a “works express” class with Taylor or Maddy, but any class you choose is guaranteed to kick your butt and make you happy.
The best part of the morning follows showering and getting ready: BREAKFAST AND COFFEE.
First up is The Daily. It is located in downtown Charleston on Upper King, a 4-minute drive from the Works Cycle and Works Yoga, making it a prime dining spot. Chloe’s order from this establishment is their breakfast burrito and lavender honey latte with almond milk. This order is superior because it feels healthy but also tastes amazing! Street orders the avocado toast with a fried egg over medium and iced vanilla latte. Sometimes she will order the whipped feta toast instead if she is craving something sweet. She has been eating here for as long as she can remember and would recommend the daily to anyone for lunch and breakfast. The workers are efficient and the setup feels cozy. It definitely gets a 10/10 rating from both of us.
Mozzo is the best restaurant in all of Charleston and Chloe goes here about four times a week. Ever looking for Chloe? She’s probably at Mozzo. Street and Chloe’s order is a bacon egg and cheese on a croissant each and then they share an order of french toast and home fries (we are hungry after doing savasana). Chloe likes their coffee because it is a very strong cold brew and she is addicted to caffeine but then Street thinks they have terrible coffee which is the downside. Starbucks is right next store so if she needs energy she can pop over there to get an iced vanilla latte before leaving for school. Mozzo is great if you go to a class at the Mount Pleasant works class, it is about a 5-minute drive away on Coleman Boulevard and is in the direction of the school. Although Mozzo is a pretty popular place to go, the line moves pretty fast and the employees are super helpful. The reason it isn’t ranked number 1 is because it definitely feels a little less healthy which depending on the morning class we only sometimes crave. 9/10 !
Huriyali is also downtown but a little further from the Works, this spot has more seating options and definitely feels very healthy as a good portion of the menu is vegan. However, sometimes the food does take a while which can be annoying. Street always orders a breakfast sammie with a fried egg, cheddar turkey bacon, no tomato, and no purple rain smoothie. Her one critique is that the sandwich comes with a side of corn chips which she thinks is pretty random because who wants plain corn chips with their breakfast? The lattes are very tasty here and they do have wifi so if you need to get some studying pre-school it is a fantastic choice for you. Additionally, the menu offers many smoothies and açai bowls, which is very refreshing after a sweaty class. This spot is a solid 8.5/10.
Second State has multiple locations spread across the Charleston area, although there is one located right across the street from the works in Mount Pleasant, that particular location does not offer breakfast, only coffee. We would recommend the other one in Mount Pleasant, ****. This spot is particularly great because there are a solid amount of tables inside, giving you and your friends a place to eat comfortably, socialize and potentially study last minute for an assessment. Chloe loves to order a maple cardamom latte with the breakfast scramble. Street loves the breakfast burrito here and will order an iced chai latte with almond milk. The menu has great variety. One of our friends is very picky and another is vegan and we have found that this place has something for just about everyone. Another perk is the lunch options offered, if you didn’t have time to pack a lunch and don’t normally eat the school lunch, order something and save it for school!! Second state gets a 8/10, not being ranked higher suer to the occasional blandness of the food.
Last but not least we have Ruby’s Bagels. Located right near the Cooper River Bridge off of Coleman Boulevard. Chloe orders a Rico bagel with bacon egg cheese avocado and chipotle sauce on a plain bagel with a maple latte with almond milk. Street likes to get 2 bagels, a sweet and savory one! Her favorite sweet ones are the french toast and cinnamon sugar and her favorite savory ones are the cheddar bagel with chive cream cheese or a sesame bagel with bacon, egg, cheese and avocado. All toasted of course! Honestly though you can’t go wrong here, if bagels are your kinda speed then this is just the place for you. Ruby’s also has these great punch cards, Street has worked through 4 in the past couple of years and has gotten 4 free bagels. In Chloe and Street’s opinion, Ruby’s additionally has great coffees due to their long varying list of flavors. If we were ranking best places to go with your friends on a Saturday or Sunday morning for a later more chill vibe, Ruby’s would be top of the list however post workout Ruby’s bagels earns a 7/10 from us.
