Hi Raptors! The Winter Semi-Formal is coming up on February 8th from 7-9:30. It will be located in the Academic Magnet gymnasium, and the theme is “Fly Me to the Moon.” This dance is an excellent opportunity to dress up for a night of dancing and have fun with your friends outside of school! Magnet’s school dances are notorious for being super enjoyable and anticipated. I know for many freshmen (even some sophomores, juniors, and seniors can be a little apprehensive), the concept of your first high school dance can be a little intimidating, so here are some frequently asked questions (FAQ) about how the usual Academic Magnet Winter Semi-Formal goes.
Do I need a ticket?
Yes! In order to go to the semi-formal, you will need to purchase a ticket to the dance. They are $12, and you can buy them at this link: https://gofan.co/event/2825093?schoolId=SC15
Pro Tip: Add your ticket(s) to your Apple Wallet if you have an iPhone so it is easily accessible when you are entering the dance and if there is bad internet connection
Do a lot of students go?
Yes! Many students from all four grades attend the semi-formal, as it is the only dance for freshmen and sophomores, and it is highly anticipated all year. It is a great event that brings together most AMHS students, as well as some teachers and administrators.
What should I wear?
Since it is a semi-formal event, it is encouraged to dress appropriately and not in casual attire. Many girls wear a dress, specifically a short formal dress, and they save the long gowns for prom. But wear whatever makes you feel your best and comfortable! There is a lot of variety in color, pattern, cut, and style of dresses every year, so choose whichever dress fits your unique style. Many boys typically wear a dress shirt, button-down shirt, or polo. It is also usual to wear dress pants, and it is also expected to add on a blazer, tie, or bowtie. According to the Weather Channel, the high temperature on February 8th is 56 degrees, and the low is 36 degrees, so dress so you won’t be cold!
Do I have to dress for the theme?
The theme is “Fly Me to the Moon” which is about outer space, planets, stars, and alien vibes. It is not required to dress to the theme, but it is welcomed! You could dress in galaxy colors like blue, purple, black, and silver. Outer-space-themed accessories could spice up your outfit, adding a slight touch.
Where can I get a semi-formal dress?
Many people rent, buy, or borrow a dress from a friend if you are looking for a semi-formal dress. If you want to buy, I suggest visiting some popular websites like Revolve, Runaway the Label, Lulus, Princess Polly, Edikted, and The Real Real. If you want to rent a dress to save money, some websites like Fashion Pass, Nuuly, and Rent the Runway have some great options! But it is always nice to borrow a dress from a friend because it guarantees you a cute dress at little to no cost!
What are corsages and boutonnières, and are they necessary?
Corsages and boutonnières are a popular tradition in high school semi-formals, homecomings, and prom. Essentially, they are two small flower arrangements exchanged between dates. A corsage is meant for the girl to be worn on her wrist, and the boutonnière is intended to be pinned to the lapel of the boy’s blazer. Oftentimes, you can reserve both of these ahead of time from local florists. Corsages typically cost around $30-$50, and boutonnières around $15-$20. They are not necessary, but many individuals like to purchase them to get the classic “pinning the boutonnière on” picture.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
I would suggest bringing a small purse with you to the semi-formal as you will need your phone to show your ticket (phones will be allowed at this event) and any small items you think you will need (lip gloss, money, phone charger, etc.).
Will there be food and drinks?
Yes, every year, there is a concession stand with water, sodas, and snacks in case you get hungry or thirsty. These will be free so don’t worry about having to bring any extra money.
Do I need a date?
No, dates are not required at this dance. Although many students decide to ask a date, many go alone or with a group. Don’t worry if you do not have a date; it is entirely normal! You will have fun either way and don’t need another person to get down on the dance floor!
Can I bring a guest from another school?
Yes, this year, the student council has decided that students from other schools will be allowed to attend the AMHS Semi-Formal dance. If you plan on bringing an outside-of-school student, you and your guest must fill out a guest form. The other students must get it signed by one of their school administrators and parents. More information about this will be coming soon.
What kind of music will be played?
A DJ will play the music. He primarily plays pop songs from the 2000s and current hits. The carefully selected playlist will make it difficult not to dance. If there is a song you wish would be played, you can go up to the DJ booth during the dance to request a song!
Are there any activities other than dancing?
In previous years, students could use a photo booth in the back of the gymnasium. This is an excellent opportunity to snap a photo of great memories with your friends!
Well, Raptors, let me know if you have any additional questions you would like answered, and I hope this article provides some new information. Make sure to come to the AMHS Semi-Formal because you can only experience this fun dance four times in your life! Street Wilson even says she “loves semi because it includes all grades, and it is so fun to see people of all ages in a social environment, but make sure to buy your tickets!”
