AMHS has a plethora of sports. One of these sports is sailing. Many might not realize that we have a sailing team at AMHS but it is definitely something to look into if you are interested. Not all of the team is included in this article, but mentioned here are a mix of novice and veteran sailors as well as one who attended Olympic trials! This is team is led by their fearless coach James Renneker. Last year the team lost a lot of senior icons such as Lawton Harper, Alexa Conlon, and Caroline Uram. While these were big losses to the team, seniors, Garret Davis and Elizabeth Hample are eager to fill the leadership roles as they embark on their last year on the team.
William M. is a junior who has become a familiar face on AMHS Sailing Team over the past 3 years years and remains one of its oldest members. His sailing passion started at the age of 9, whereupon he never looked back. Throughout the years, William mastered several types of boats, yet more than anything he recalls the J-24’s he sailed during 2020. That year was special for William, not only with the bounding competitive energy but also for the camaraderie and teamwork needed sailing the J-24, a performance-oriented and adaptable keelboat. William’s experience provides an essential leadership role for the team. He positively influences each of the newer sailors, helping them make the right trimming decisions and map the best course to round a mark.
Garrett Davis: Garrett Davis is a senior at AMHS and for Garret, sailing is a family tradition. With six years of experience under his belt, Garrett first learned the ropes—literally—by sailing Hobie Cats with his dad. “Those were the best times,” Garrett shares. Now those early lessons come to the forefront with Garrett’s time with AMHS. Since Garrett is cool under pressure and tactical, he reads the wind well and stays collected in hard times. Sailing is for him much more than something he does for fun; it means a return to a time and a bond that he shares with his family.
Charlie C.: Charlie C. is a junior at AMHS and has been sailing for the last 3 years. His sheer energy and zeal typify a sailor who has shown great promise. While he may have joined the fleet late compared to his teammates, he has taken the plunge to quickly grasp the sport. Most memorable? Watching the Ashley Hall coach at every Monday practice. It sounds kind of weird, yet Charlie states that that weekly meeting is a highlight because it demonstrates the togetherness outside the team. Charlie is nothing but grit and positive attitude combined with a fun attitude. whether the team is training under varying light winds or battling heavy gusts. He faces all challenges with a smile, full of determination for improving.
Mason F.: Mason F. is a junior at AMHS and has sailed for seven year and brings his own slant to the sport. Apart from competing, Mason coaches younger sailors during summer vacation. The fondest memories flow from those experiences as he
gets great joy from sharing his sailing knowledge. Mason also said that one of his favorite parts of the sport is attending summer regattas, these are fun experiences that are enhanced by the nice summer weather.
Elizabeth H:Elizabeth H. is a senior at AMHS and has been sailing for five years and has already amassed a collection of memories that highlight her passion for the sport. Among her favorites are competing in the Great Oaks Regatta and the carefree days spent sailing during the summer. The Great Oaks Regatta, a prestigious event for high school sailors, stands out for Elizabeth because of the high-energy competition and the sense of accomplishment that comes with representing AMHS on a larger scale. For Elizabeth, summer sailing has a different charm. It’s a time to relax, experiment, and focus on improving skills without the pressure of competition. “There’s something magical about being out on the water in the summer, with the sun shining and the freedom to just sail,” she says.
Louise Martin: Louise Martin is a junior at AMHS, you might recognize her name from the AMHS Instagram, Last year Louise qualified and competed at national qualifiers. This happened after she won 11/15 races in Miami at SAISA qualifying meet. Since Louise has joined the team she has brought new talent that has helped the team improve.
