What’s up, raptors! This week, September 16th to September 20th is our fall spirit week. This will be your ultimate spirit guide to gain as much knowledge as possible, achieve the best outfits, and have the most fun. Spirit week is a biannual competitive week at Magnet, one in the spring and one in the fall, that allows students to go all out in some fun outfits while participating in other amusing activities such as the battle of the bands, a pep rally, and more! Grades go head to head in many categories, such as best dressed, best wall, and most participation throughout the grade. Unfortunately, this will be a four-day spirit week because we don’t have school on Friday, but make sure to come to the homecoming football game versus St. Johns on Friday, September 20th; the theme is blackout! (Make sure to buy tickets)
Here are this week’s themes:
Monday: Drab vs. Fab
This is a new theme magnet that has never been seen before. Student council described it as “dress in your best casual or formalwear.” If you were to go the “drab” route, you could come to school in pajamas, sweats, or anything comfortable and chill. If you want to dress fancier, go with your trendiest, most fashionable outfit. The event that will be happening on Monday will be a fashion show. Come out to watch your peers strut down the runway!
Tuesday: Coachella
Tuesday is one of the most fun days to dress up. For those who don’t know, Coachella is a very popular annual music and arts festival for its celebrity attendance and extravagant outfits. Every year at Magnet, we have a day dedicated to dressing up in this funky fashion. Many people on Coachella Day come to school with all their glitter, tie-dye, and over-the-top jewels. Anything from boho to your most glam festival fit will get you points for Coachella Day. Get excited for Tuesday’s battle of the bands in the courtyard. Each year, a group of students from each grade form a band and play a song to the audience of AMHS students. Magnet’s faculty and staff serve as judges, determine which band won the battle, and hand the points over to the victor.
Wednesday: Generation Day
Get ready to go back in time or far into the future on Wednesday! The 18th is Generation Day, and freshmen should dress as babies, with many wearing bonnets, nightgowns, or onesies. The sophomores’ generation is toddlers, wearing baby tees with mythical animals or big bows in their hair. Juniors should dress as adults, and many people opt to dress in a specific career, such as doctors, lawyers, and businessmen. But some take it a step further, roleplaying as a soccer mom. Finally, we have the seniors dressed up as senior citizens, utilizing walkers and gray wigs as they fall down the stairwell on their way to the nursing home. Prepare for it to take a while to get to class, as these senior citizens block the hallways with their snail-like speed. There will be bingo on Wednesday, so practice your skills for a potential “Bingo” to get your grade points!
Thursday: Wall Day
The end of spirit week is usually a Friday, but in our case, Thursday the 19th is Magnet’s fall wall day. Wall Day is a Magnet tradition that has been going on for many years. Each grade votes on a theme for their designated wall somewhere within the school. Then, in the days leading up to wall day, students will collect materials and decorations to prepare for designing their walls. On Wednesday the 18th, the student council leaders of each grade urge magnet students to stay after school to assist in creating their fabulous themed wall. The best walls are always the ones with the most help, whether that is time or materials! On Thursday, freshman sophomores, juniors, and seniors should come to school dressed according to their wall day theme. The underclassman wall themes are generally known, but the seniors’ is top secret, so prepare for the big reveal! Come into school five to ten minutes early so you can walk through the halls of Magnet to view all four of the fantastic walls, but make sure you’re still in class on time! There will also be a pep rally on Thursday as if it couldn’t get any more fun. Due to this event, each class will be shortened by a few minutes to save time to get hype at the pep rally! At the rally, we will encourage school spirit, shout out to fall sports teams, and announce the winners of Spirit Week.
Friday:
On Friday, September 20th, there is no school. Although this is sad because it cuts our spirit week one day short, it gives you more time to prepare for our homecoming football game!!! The game is at D4 stadium in North Charleston at 7:30 versus St. Johns. Don’t be late. The address is 3659 W Montague Ave, North Charleston, SC 29418. Make sure to participate in the chants, dress up for the theme (blackout), and bring your most spirited self to support our boys. We wish our football team the best of luck on this game, hopefully bringing home that W for AMHS.
Senior spinoffs:
You may notice that the seniors’ outfits do not align with the themes throughout the week. This is because of a tradition called “senior spinoff.” This means that each day, the seniors will have a separate theme from the rest of Magnet that aligns with the original theme by either a play on words or in some other way. But these spinoffs are kept secret, so you will only know once you walk into school each day and try to guess their different themes.
Conclusion:
I hope this article helped explain Spirit Week, and as a senior and spirit leader, I ask you to make sure you do three things this week:
1. Come to school in your most on-theme outfits each day throughout the week.
2. Come to the football game spirited and ready to cheer on our players.
3. HAVE FUN! This is one of my favorite memories at Magnet, and it’s meant to unite our student body while encouraging some school spirit!
