How To Have the Most Fall Fall Pt. 2

Ellyse Ramos, Leila Tabrizian, and Sarah Baer

Ellyse and Sarah at Dreaming Farms Pumpkin Patch on Camp Road

Activities (pumpkin patch, haunted house, etc)

Pumpkin patch- If you do not go to a pumpkin patch during fall, did you really experience fall??? Any pumpkin patch will do, however, the key is to spend a significant amount of time in the patch analyzing every pumpkin to find the perfect one. Personally, I am more of a find-the-ugliest-pumpkin-possible kind of person.

You also must take pictures holding your chosen gourd while, preferably, sitting on one of the numerous hay bales scattered throughout the patch.

Cafe board games– We have recently started this tradition and we are huge fans of it. First of all, you HAVE to choose an artsy local cafe (No Starbucks); this is CRUCIAL to achieving the right vibe. The place has to have ambient lighting. Some games we recommend would be Uno, Clue, and card games. We highly recommend against Monopoly since it can get heated!! Some great cafes include:

Leila and Ellyse at the Terrace Theater playing board games before seeing French Dispatch.

Terrace Theater– The terrace theater on James Island is the perfect spot to go watch a movie on the big screen. When you walk in, it has a retro aesthetic with a red carpet, vintage concessions stand, and vintage movie posters that make for the ideal theater experience. If you head over there early, they also have a super cozy lounge with board games you can play while you wait for your feature film. They show blockbuster movies, as well as independent films, so there is something for everyone. They also have a ton of super cool events coming up in October, like screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show throughout October and November. Definitely check them out.

Go get a pumpkin spice latte – An absolute necessity. While I usually enjoy my coffee drinks iced, I feel like you must experience it hot on a chilly rainy day. Pumpkin spice lattes will immediately transport you into a fall mood and they are super yummy. And NO, there should be no shame in ordering it either- enjoy. I recommend the caramel pumpkin latte from Harken on Queen Street.

Blue Ridge Parkway– If you are looking for a nice, short road trip, the Blue Ridge Parkway is apparently super beautiful in fall. You can head over to Asheville and enjoy the city, while also driving through mountainous roads. We went during the summer and it was super pretty, but when the leaves change colors in the fall, it literally looks like a typical Northeast fall. Apparently, the best time to visit is mid through late October.

Apple Orchard– While there aren’t any in the Lowcountry area, it would be SO much fun to take a small day trip with your friends and go apple picking upstate on a chilly fall day. You could pick apples, enjoy warm apple cider, and listen to the immaculate fall  playlists we have created on the drive ;).

Things to cook/bake

Pumpkin bread- I personally am a huge fan of all types of bread(I don’t even like bananas but I could eat banana bread literally every day). So naturally pumpkin bread is some of my favorite fall food ever. Especially if it’s made right, the texture and flavor both exude fall vibes and it’s overall just enjoyable to eat too.

Things to eat

Pumpkin caramel latte from harken-This pumpkin spice latte is so so yummy. It has the perfect spice flavor and the caramel gives the latte such a smooth, rich taste. I’ve had it both hot and iced and can confirm that both are delicious and receive a 10/10 on the fall scale.

Pumpkin croissant from baguette magic– I can’t believe I didn’t know about this before, but the other day I got a pumpkin croissant from Baguette Magic and, wow, was it good. First of all, the outside was super pretty with orange stripes, and the inside contained a pumpkin custard type of situation that was an amazing surprise when I cut into it. Sadly, no photos were taken as I ate it too fast.

Pumpkin cinnamon roll– The best of bothworlds: pumpkin and cinnamon rolls, the trader joe’s pumpkin cinnamon roll is scrumptious. It’s not very hard to make, yet as with most of the foods at Trader Joe’s, the outcome is amazing. The taste brings in fall vibes and if you’re a fan of cinnamon rolls, you will most definitely enjoy it.

Things to Wear:

  • Arm and leg warmers: these are both practical and very cute. Personally, this fall I have paired them with ballet flats. Legwarmers can give grunge vibes and balletcore at the same time. Once it gets to 60 degrees and below these will be the perfect staple for fall.

  • Chunky 70s belt: I have been obsesseddd with these belts lately. They give Jane Birken vibes who I absolutely adore. These belts are a great way to add definition to an outfit. I have seen statement belts like this popping up in NY fashion week especially since we are entering a remake of the 2010s grunge era.
  • Grandpa sweaters: the best fall vibes can be created while searching for grandpa sweaters in thrift stores. They are very comfortable and offer warm blanket feels. These are a great way to incorporate patterns and colors into a simple fall outfit.

  • Graphic tights: Tights with graphic prints blew up last year with the Maison Margeila blue tights. There have also been Vivienne Westwood tightspopping up on social media. I think these will be very trendy this coming fall. They are a great way to spice up a monochrome outfit.

  • Equestrian boots: I just recently got a pair of these boots to add to my fall wardrobe. Although they can be expensive I was able to snag mine (Frye boots) off eBay for $25. Sometimes making an offer that you think is lowballing will work 🙂 They are the perfect boot to wear during cold weather and go with every outfit.
  • Black and red leather coats: If you see one of these at a thrift store snag it!!! It will be a staple in your closet for the rest of your life. It gives Matrix in the best way possible. These coats or trenches add an edge to your outfit while maintaining a very chic look.

Honorable mentions

  • Black tights
  • Anything Diesel
  • Maxi skirts
  • Vests
  • Whimsigoth stuff
  • Loafers
  • Doc Martens

Events

Fright night (dates for this year): Fright night is always a classic for halloween season in Charleston. Whether you work as an employee or go for fun, I feel like it’s hard to go through halloween without at least hearing about fright night.

  •  West Farm Corn Maze: You can’t dofall without a corn maze. It’s hard to find some that are big, but the west farm corn maze definetely doesn’t dissapoint.
  • Harvest festival Johns Island County Park
  • Rocky Horror Picture Show Screening @ Terrace Theater
  • Pumpkin Carving with Goats in Summerville https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pumpkin-carving-with-goats-tickets-406852856847?aff=odcleoeventsincollection
  • Scarowinds: (Sept. 16th- Oct 30th, select dates) The park will feature haunted mazes, scare zones, and live entertainment. This could make a great weekend or day road trip for friends. Ellyse and I are very excited to be going with Key Club this weekend!
  • Coastal Carolina Fair- Oct 27- Nov 6: The annual fair that comes to Ladson, SC- we had the best time going here last year. Even if you’re not a huge fan of rides (like Sarah and Leila), the fair food, games, and overall vibe make it worth it in my opinion. Leila and I (Ellyse) love getting the fair food – I mean who doesn’t. I love a good funnel cake or elephant ear. Currently the admission price is $12 and $23 for a wristband(which gets you unlimited rides). This is fairly cheap in my opinion. We highly recommend the wristband If you are planning on staying for a full day because the prices for tickets can soon rack up. They even have a zoo where you can adopt bunnies and chickens!
