Roselle- the Heroic Retriever
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson, a 51 year old man blind since birth, headed up to his office on the 78th floor of the North Tower. Michael’s guide dog, Roselle, sat by his side while he prepared for a meeting. At 8:46 a.m., the building was struck by American Airlines Flight 11. Roselle jumped into action as Michael called his wife to tell her something had hit the building, but he would be home soon. He then grabbed Roselle’s harness and was guided through his office to the stairwell, where they departed down 78 flights of stairs. Michael could smell the jet fuel, but was completely unaware of what was happening around him, except for the hundreds of people crowding the stairwell trying to escape. The temperatures in the stairwell were rising and Michael could hear his dog panting heavily, her throat scratched by jet-fuel fumes. Many of the firefighters stopped to offer Michael assistance, but he declined and instead let the firefighters pet Roselle on their way up the stairwell. It took nearly an hour to reach the lobby, and despite Roselle’s thirst and pain, she continued to guide her owner through the chaos and to the subway station, even stopping to help a woman blinded by debris. Michael said, “While everyone ran in panic, Roselle remained totally focused on her job, while debris fell around us, and even hit us, Roselle stayed calm”. Michael was soon able to return home to his wife and became a spokesperson for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Roselle passed away in 2011, “I’ve had many other dogs,” Michael wrote, “but there is only one Roselle”.
