Animal Heroes- LuLu the Pot-bellied Pig
In 1997, Jo Ann and Jack Altsman of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania agreed to babysit their daughter’s pot bellied pig, LuLu. The bond between the Altsmans and LuLu grew, and she became a permanent member of their family. A year later, Jo Ann suffered a heart attack while her husband was gone on a fishing trip and LuLu was there to save the day. As her owner laid on the floor, LuLu pushed her way past the fence and ran out to the the road. She then proceeded to play dead and eventually got the attention of one driver, who LuLu guided back to the house. The driver called 911 and Jo Anne was taken to the hospital to have open heart surgery. LuLu received the Tiffany gold hero’s medal from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and made appearances on the Oprah Winfrey show and David Letterman.
