Now that we are a few weeks away from officially being done with high school, I wanted to reflect on the class of 2025’s 4-year experience as a whole.
Growing up, my sister and her friends made it clear that sophomore year was by far the best year of high school; however, I would also hear about the inevitable “sophomore slump”. While at the same time it was logical that senior year would be the best because you are rewarded more freedoms, but then there is the impending doom of the college application process that must be factored in. The one thing that was emphasized was how miserable junior year would be; the combination of standardized tests, preparing your resume, and balancing your hardest workload yet was sure to be the worst.
Despite all the varying opinions you hear going into high school, everyone gains their own experience and will graduate with a different answer to the famous question” what was the best year of high school?”
For me personally, I enjoyed junior year the most. I felt that although the workload sucked, I had the most fun and enjoyed being an upperclassman but not the oldest. I loved the class of 2024 and do miss them dearly, I think that our grades got along well, and it was a great dynamic. I also am a firm believer in the fact that senior year is more stressful than junior year. Senior year gets real fast, and in the blink of an eye, you are forced to make a hard decision about the next 4 years of your life.
Freshman year feels like a fever dream, the dispersion of friend groups is honestly laughable. Looking back on it I feel like I am a completely different person and know that a lot of my peers also notice the evolution between then and now.
I first asked our grade, “What was your best year school work wise?”
Then I asked the class of 2025, “What was your best year “fun” and social wise?”
Lastly, I asked, “If you got to relive one year which would you choose?”
What interesting and surprising results!
When I asked Student Body president, Zach Butler, to reflect on his experience he said, “Sophomore has gotta be the best year because it was the most chill (and easiest, carried my GPA) and also the spirit weeks were the most fun that year. Although I might be biased because our haunted house wall sophomore year was a really fun memory. Senior year has got to be the most fun social wise because you’re trying to get out and go make the most memories and I’ve really gotten to know a lot more people.”
Fellow Senior, Rentz Hughes agrees with Zach and told me that “Sophomore year was just “that year” for me in high school. My work was challenging, but not too challenging. I was able to consistently have fun with friends while maintaining good grades. I had an amazing friend group across multiple schools, and we created memories I will never forget. I grew close with many people with whom I am still close today. It is the year that defined me the most as a person. All of my years at Magnet have had unforgettable, fun moments, but sophomore year is easily the one I will look back on the fondest.”
How sweet!
May we all cherish each year wandering the AMHS halls forever and ever.
