Students at Academic Magnet High school are always very unique and have different hobbies and passions outside of school, but too often their skills in school are the only characteristics that people look at to define them, especially when they are new to Magnet. This week in the Talon, the Sophomore Spotlight is on Tripp Bates, a well rounded student who balances his time between academics, football, music, and enjoying time with friends on the weekends.
Tripp is an active member of the AMHS community both in and out of the classroom. One of his favorite hobbies is playing the guitar and learning new songs to play for his friends and family. Due to his passion for music, he says that his favorite class at Academic Magnet is guitar with Mr. Grimshaw. Although I have personally never taken guitar, I hear from a variety of students at Academic Magnet that guitar is one of their favorite classes due to its engaging and fun atmosphere. Tripp states, “I enjoy guitar because it builds upon itself, and I enjoy seeing myself improve at it every day.” Aside from music, Tripp is also an athlete. He plays defensive back for the Academic Magnet football team, making sure to limit the other team’s ability to move the football through the air. It is not easy to balance school work and sports, especially at Academic Magnet High School, but Tripp takes the challenge head on and loves being part of the football team here at AMHS. When he’s not on the field or in school, Tripp prefers to spend his free time outdoors. Tripp states, “My favorite things to do after school are hanging out with friends and fishing.” From spending quality time on the water while going fishing to hanging out with friends and family downtown, Tripp is sure to make use of what limited free time he has between work, school and sports. In the future, Tripp is looking forward to what the rest of his sophomore year has in store for him. He says that he is “Definitely looking forward to learning more from my classes as well as hanging out with friends”. Tripp is sure to make time for his schooling and social life which is a large part in what makes him such a well rounded student and a perfect fit for an Academic Magnet student. When asked about his favorite school memory at AMHS thus far, Tripp said that it was Powderpuff. Tripp states that he liked powder puff so much because he “Personally liked the atmosphere and just joking around with my friends.” Powderpuff, unites students at Magnet in a competitive, yet enjoyable environment, and is a fun activity for students like Tripp at Academic Magnet to get to know each other well and work on their team working skills while having a good time.
With his commitment to academics, sports, and personal development, Tripp Bates is an outstanding student here at AMHS.
