This week I interviewed sophomore Yidong Ye, about life, going to school with his brother, his Bonds-Wilson experience, and his clubs / sports in high school thus far. Please enjoy Yidong’s charming and clever persona, and say “Hi Yidong Ye!” to him in the hallway!
How did you decide to come to Magnet instead of another school?
Yidong attended middle school at SOA and noticed that “like wow the green lanyards are absolutely mogging the red ones”, which seems like a strange rationale, but fortunately he elaborated further. Yidong stated that he had always known he was going to stay on the Bonds Wilson Campus which was an easy choice, but choosing Magnet over SOA came down to academics in the end.
How much do you hang out with your brother, Yiqing?
“Maybe around half an hour per day at home and not really at school.” An answer which underwhelmed me as I would’ve thought that they spent more time together.
Do you enjoy Magnet?
“It’s a great community filled with amazing people and very caring upperclassmen like you and Jack Troy. Would 10/10 recommend for the vibes” Yidong stated, in addition to noting that his happiness at school doesn’t rely too much on which teachers he has.
What sports and activities do you participate in?
Swimming is the big one for Yidong as he believes it’s a great way to foster relationships and stay in shape, plus he loves a healthy dose of competition. For clubs, Yidong has participated in the finance and investment clubs, attending the regular meetings, but he is peeved that he was unable to attend the Investment Club’s senior leadership trip to South Korea last summer. Sorry Yidong.
Do you know Dave Jacobs?
“Yeah, Dave has been a good friend of mine since Summer Scholars. I’ve tried to convince him to join the swim team endlessly, but he’s way too devoted to basketball I think. I went to Tuscany with him last summer which was a blast, but yeah he’s a good guy.”
What has been your favorite class at Magnet?
Yidong said his favorite class is probably AP Chemistry as for him, the workload hasn’t been too bad and he thinks Mr. Devenio is a cool guy. With only a couple homework assignments, labs and AP classroom sets per unit, it sounds pretty chill. The labs are pretty interesting too, it sounds.
Here is a poem about Yidong that I wrote.
Yidong Ye, the Swimmer of the Tides
Through dawn’s first light and evening’s glow,
Yidong Ye makes waters flow.
With every stroke, with every dive,
He cuts the waves, alive, alive.
His brother cheers from off the side,
A bond unshaken by the tide.
Through races won and lessons learned,
They stand as one, their spirits burned.
The pool’s his stage, the clock his foe,
Through endless laps, his strength will grow.
A swimmer swift, with heart so free,
Yidong Ye rules land and sea.
