The Varsity Women’s Lacrosse team has had 7 games. Their record currently sits at (3-3)
The team’s season started with a home opener against James Island, which they won 19-9. This was a big deal for the girls because they only won by 2 points last year. Junior Hayden Moody was selected as player of the game and had a hat trick!
The very next day the girls went face to face with Ashley Hall. Captain Sousa Wagonner mentions how “this game is always intense and aggressive but creates a competitive energy that I think is healthy for the players”. After a rocky first half, the team won 11-7. They pulled through and gave it all they had till the last horn. Player of the game was awarded to Sophomore captain Lauren Schaffer as all her teammates really leaned on her when the score got too close for comfort.
3 days after AH, the team got on a two hour bus ride to Lexington SC, as they had never played this team before no one knew what to expect. It turns out that Lexington is a very strong defensive team who at times were too braggy and very aggressive. The team unfortunately lost 22-3 but learned a lot and definitely became closer on the bus ride there and back. We stopped for Chick- Fil-A and shared stories of our interesting interactions with the other team.
On Monday March 3rd Varsity Glax played against West Ashley and won 17-1. The girls definitely improved on attack and although many WA players pushed and shoved us around we were proud to come out on top. Chloe Trowman shares that one player cursed her out on the draw circle, how inappropriate. On a positive side, I, Street Wilson, reached 100 career points against West Ashley.
This was very fun for the team as Sousa and others made a pretty poster to celebrate the accomplishment! Varsity was supposed to play Porter Gaud on Wednesday, March 5th, but the game was unfortunately canceled due to the storm. However a few of the girls were sick so this provided a good rest time for the team and allowed everyone to get back to healthy standards.
On Friday March 7th we went up against a Georgia team, Effingham. We had never played this team before so we didn’t know what to expect. The game was a tight match up, the lead continued to flip and in the first quarters the two teams were neck and neck. Sadly in the 4th quarter the Rebels went on a 4 goal run and took the lead. The raptors fought till the very last second but were not able to pull it off. The final score was 18-13. Although the loss sucked, games that are close are always great experiences because of the high intensity. Out of the 13 goals, Sophomores Clementine Willard and Lauren Schaffer each scored 5 goals.
On Tuesday the 17th, the team played Ashley hall for the second time but this time away. It was a 5pm game and the sun was bright and hot. We unfortunately lost 13-6. The game was eventful to say the least, our team had a total of 4 yellow cards and definitely at odds with the head ref who left us feeling very confused and belittled on the field multiple times throughout the game. Although the loss was sad and as individuals we felt defeated we stuck together as a team the whole time and continued to lead on one another which is what matters.
Make sure to come to Senior night on April 10th at D4 Stadium versus Phillip Simmons. The girls play at 5pm and the boys will play at 7pm.
