At a school with over 700 students, it’s not likely you’ll get to know every one of them. Students at Magnet come from all over the county, all pooled together on one campus, creating a unique space with a vast variety of different people. This issue underclassmen were our spotlight, giving a select few the opportunity to tell the rest of the student body about themselves.
Meet Finley:
Finley Frenkel is a freshman this year at Magnet, originally from Moultrie Middle school. She moved to Charleston from New York City in 6th grade and has a younger brother who goes to School of the Arts. This year she’s taking classic freshman classes like AP Human Geography, P.E., and Biology. She thinks that her most interesting class is Algebra, but she also really enjoys English 1 with Mrs. Akery. When I asked her what type of classes she’s interested in taking her following years at Magnet, she replied with “AP Stats, AP Psych, and idk.” Both classes are popular for Magnet students and people typically perform well on these exams, so these are great options. Other good options upperclassmen would suggest include Marine Biology, Newspaper Production, or Yearbook Production.
Finley doesn’t really know what she wants to do after high school, and didn’t specify a college she’s particularly interested in right now. It’s great to keep your options open as an underclassman, for you are probably not going to end up where you think. She did say that she might be interested in something related to education, science, or math. Perhaps she’s taking inspiration from her carpool driver, senior Evie Walldorf, who is planning on pursuing a career in education post-grad. I asked her about Evie next. When asked if she likes Evie Walldorf she said “Yes!” and when I asked if she was a good driver she replied, “Yes! We have yet to crash, and morning conversations are always interesting.” That is definitely what I hear from Evie as well. She loves driving underclassmen to school.

When Finley isn’t at school she likes to go on the boat, go to the beach, or just hangout with her friends and try cute crafts or ideas that they see. She also plays tennis at Magnet and enjoys playing tennis for fun or attending tennis tournaments. She’s involved in a plethora of other activities at school as well, including: Key Club, Families First Club, Marine Bio Club, Red Cross Club, and Peace Corps Club. Wow!
Her favorite things that have happened at Magnet this year had to be the first Spirit Week “where everyone got REALLY dressed up” and “all the days we randomly get cancelled.” These are some fantastic takes, Spirit Week is crucial to the Magnet experience and not going to school is the best part about school.
I asked her a few fun questions next. Finley says her celebrity crushes are Drew Starkey, Brady Noon, and Walker Scobell and some of her favorite movies are The Notebook, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Mamma Mia!. Her favorite restaurant is Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan’s Island and her favorite sports teams are the Philadelphia Eagles and the Phillies.
