Mr Percy, Mr Percy where do we begin? Mr Percy is one of the most chill calm teachers within the school of Magnet. He teaches Math specifically Statistics and Pre-cal.
He has 28 years of experience in the classroom, teaching young minds while incorporating his own personal touch into the job. Whether teaching probability or sharing a good laugh over cat videos, Mr. Percy has made a lasting impact on his students and fellow teachers alike.
A Lifelong Dedication to Teaching
Mr. Percy has been teaching for nearly three decades, and even though he is technically retired, he continues to work. His numerous years at the school have left an indelible mark, and he is respected by a number of his students and fellow teachers for his laid-back yet effective style of teaching. When asked if he would teach again if he had to do it all over, he hesitated. He probably would, but he was not so sure. If nothing mattered he would want to be a lighting engineer at a concert.
A Love for Sports
Outside the classroom, Mr. Percy has been very active in sports as well. He was a football player, a wrestler, a discus thrower, and even dabbled in rugby. Not only did these activities shape his competitive spirit but also his passion for coaching and mentoring young athletes. That season, the football team, had an 8-2 seasons that were quite noteworthy. He was also active in sports other than football because he led the boys’ tennis team to their state titles at the school.
An avid sports fan, Mr. Percy is a fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Cleveland Browns, staying loyal to his Ohio roots. As for his perfect day, it’s simple: college football watching and eating wings.
Hometown Roots and Family Life
A lifelong Ohio native, Mr. Percy spent a good part of his childhood on a farm until his father’s job took the family away. The middle of three brothers, he was taught the value of hard work from a young age.
His own family life is similarly prosperous. He has two children—a 29-year-old son who is a day trader and a 28-year-old daughter who played volleyball at the University of South Carolina. His son graduated in 2013 following a lacrosse career at the College of Charleston.
Daily Life and Routine Beyond Teaching
Mr. Percy’s ordinary day starts in the best way possible—waking up all cozy. He showers with Head & Shoulders shampoo, gets dressed, and eats a breakfast of peanut butter toast and banana. Then he heads off to school, where he plans first-period A-day class and prepares second-period B-day class. On Wednesdays, bi-monthly meetings, but otherwise after school, his routine varies. He goes to the store certain days; other days, he spends his time watching TV, particularly The Walking Dead.
Mr. Percy’s interests in entertainment are diverse. His favorite movie is The Waterboy, a classic sports comedy. Musically, he enjoys Led Zeppelin and Night Flight. And while most spend their free time scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, Mr. Percy spends time on Facebook Reels.
The Man Behind the Math
Despite teaching Pre-Calculus and Statistics, Mr. Percy’s favorite class to teach is Pre-Calc. When asked why he is the only Statistics teacher in the school, his response is simple: “I don’t know.” Despite the challenging material, he has a down-to-earth teaching approach that simplifies math for students.
His students and fellow teachers find him easy-going and relaxed. He is frequently joking with teachers like Langley, Cassidy, and Grimshaw, and even goes so far as to exchange good-natured trash talk. His sense of humor is just one of many elements that make his classroom the comfortable learning environment that it is.
Fun Facts and Preferences
Aside from his love of teaching and sports, Mr. Percy has a list of personal preferences that make him all the more interesting:
Favorite Food: Steak and potatoes with olive oil and sea salt, baked for 45 minutes.
Favorite Pie: Oreo pie.
Pancakes vs. Waffles: Pancakes since they can be stacked—with butter, bacon, and sausage on the side.
Best Fast Food: Chick-fil-A, hands down. He thinks their consistency is better than McDonald’s and loves the Monsterburger at Hardee’s, but Chick-fil-A is always the first choice. Mr. Percy says that he only has the monster burger roughly 3 times a year due to its monstrous macros.
Pets: He prefers cats over dogs. Cat videos are amusing to him, and he even has a cat. And dogs? “Dogs are stupid,” he jokes.
Dream Car: A 1973 Chevy Nova, Mr. Percy owned this car in his youth and he’s been fantasizing about it ever since.
If He Could Live Anywhere: New Zealand, opting for its natural beauty over the beach life.
Personal Maid or Chef? Both, Mr Percy said he would love to have both but if he had to come down to it, Maid, this is because he could always “throw together a little turkey sandwich.”
Pause or Rewind Button in Life? Rewind. No explanation
Who Would Play Him in a Movie? A young Bill Murray, which seems like an ideal fit. Students in the class also suggested these actors:
Denzel Washington
Timothee Chalamet
The Bean Bag Story
Most amusing, perhaps, in Mr. Percy’s life is the story of his bean bag. Questioned as to why he has one, his reason is simple: “Got it from the kids, wife wanted it out of the house.” And thus, it became his—another quirk that contributes to what he is.
A Legacy of Dedication
With nearly 30 years of teaching, Mr. Percy has touched the lives of hundreds of students. Whether they remember him for making math enjoyable, for his unrivaled observations about life, or for his deep love of sports, he has left a lasting impression on those who know him. Though he states he’s “done his time,” the fact that he’s still dedicated to education speaks volumes.
With his easy-going attitude, passion for numbers, and love of steak and college football, Mr. Percy is not just a teacher but a school legend. And no matter if he is doing paperwork or catching wings on a football Saturday, he remains a well-liked man at Magnet.
