The Philadelphia Eagles bested the Kansas City Chiefs in a defensive masterclass in Super Bowl LIX. Thankfully we were saved from the Chiefs’ three-peat by Cooper DeJean and Josh Sweat.
All game long the Eagles defense tormented Patrick Mahomes and denied him and gamebreaking plays that he is known for. While I expected the Chiefs to dominate in this matchup, I was sorely mistaken. Instead it was the Eagles who were doing the dominating.
Thanks to the Eagles’ defensive performance and an excellent game from QB Jalen Hurts, (Ms Hurt’s nephew)not much was needed from Philly’s star running back Saquon Barkley. Saquon was a huge reason the Eagles got to the Super Bowl in the first place, and the Chiefs were determined to stop him and not let the Eagles’ powerful running game take them over. When KC’s star defensive tackle, Chris Jones, was asked how they would stop Barkley from rushing for 150 yards he confidently replied that Barkley would not get 100. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, the Eagles were able to kill their defense through the air thanks to SUper Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts. Hurts threw for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed for 71 yards and another touchdown.
Even the Chief’s dark magic was not enough to save them. Fans quickly grew worried when early in the first quarter when the refs called a phantom offensive pass interference call on AJ Brown. This resulted in a huge play being called back, but fortunately the Eagles were able to overcome this shift in momentum. The Chiefs’ good luck charm, Taylor Swift, faced an unwarm welcome in the Superdome last Sunday. When shown in the jumbotron, fans in attendance proceeded to boo her. I think this is very representative of the state the league is in right now. Many fans are sick of seeing the Chiefs win and even more sick of them being shoved in our faces by the media. Some people are saying that this dynasty is more frustrating than the Patriots were, and I have to say I agree.
The Eagles’ defense proved too much for the Chiefs offensive line and Patrick Mahomes this game. After going up 10-0, the Eagles were sitting pretty comfortably going into the 2nd quarter. As Mahomes tried to rally his teammates for a scoring drive, Cooper DeJean, the Jackie Robinson of cornerbacks, picked him off and ran the ball back 30 yards for a pick six. After this moment, you could tell the dynamic of the game entirely shifted. The Chiefs became much more desperate, forcing things and playing very one dimensionally. The Eagles, however, seemed unstoppable at this point in the game. They continued this dominance for the rest of the game, finally winning 40-22.
This Super Bowl will be remembered for a long time due to the historical defensive masterclass put on by the Eagles’ front four. This game proved to have a significant impact on Patrick Mahomes’ legacy. If he had one this game it would have catapulted him into GOAT conversation because he had been the first starting quarterback to three-peat. However, this game only hurts his chance as being considered the all time great. Brady would have never collapsed when facing a deficient this large, in fact he won a Super Bowl coming back from a 25 point deficient. All in all this Super Bowl was a great reminder in how far Mahomes has to go to be considered the GOAT.
