This year’s Super Bowl ads did not disappoint! From dancing tongues to all things Alix Earle, the marketing teams did not come to play. Though there were some commercials that were pretty basic and forgettable, these were some of the most memorable ones!
Starting off with one of the most controversial ads of the year… the now notorious Coffee Mate tongue ad. Though this ad started off pretty normal, it very quickly went downhill once the main actor started to lick the cold foam off his mouth and his tongue became disconnected from his body. Though this ad definitely caught the attention of viewers, time will tell if it will actually make people want to buy this product.
Another commercial that was definitely memorable was the Breast Cancer Awareness ad, which at the beginning seemed like every other bra commercial, if not even weirder. The sudden twist though made everyone watching pay attention, which is the ultimate goal of awareness ads such as these. Breast cancer is a serious issue that needs this level of awareness, and so Ads like these are very important.
Doritos! This Ad was very unique because the idea came from a $1 million dollar prize challenge, where Dorito challenged everyday people to come up with their Ad idea for this Super Bowl. The ultimate winners of this challenge were Dylan Bradshaw and Nate Norell, who came up with the idea of “Abduction” which featured a man fighting a UFO for his bag of Doritos. This competition aspect honestly made the ad more interesting because it made viewers want to tune in and see who was the winner of the million dollar prize.
Students Jenna Hallaba (12) and Sousa Waggoner (12) said that one commercial that caught their eye was the Budweiser commercial. This featured a band of horses pulling a big Budweiser delivery, but one horse is left behind and picks up the barrel that’s left. He journeys around and eventually ends up delivering the keg to a bar – to a man inside it telling a “horse walks into a bar” joke. It was cute and Rudolph-esque, and they said they just liked it because of the horses.
To those not familiar with the movie When Harry Met Sally, the Hellmann’s commercial seemed like…an interesting approach. But to movie lovers everywhere, they understood the reference. The classic diner scene was repeated with two different actors: but this time with Hellmann’s mayo in the middle of the sandwich. And to anyone who hasn’t seen it maybe look it up and watch the clips side by side to spot any fun differences! This also guest starred actress Sydney Sweeney!
Not the most interesting commercial necessarily, actually it was a little boring, was the Angel Soft commercial. But what was interesting was the way they changed it up from the normal ads. It was just a big plain green screen with a floating baby instructing you that it was your “potty tunity” to go to the bathroom and not miss anything. However…it only gave you 30 seconds start to finish so it might have to be a little speedy!
The Dunkin ad this year stuck to its typical formula, including Ben Affleck their celebrity spokesperson. This year’s ad features some other guests though, including Jeremy Strong and Casey Affleck. The commercial made fun of “method actors” by including Jeremy Strong soaking in coffee beans in order to prepare for his role in the commercial. Even though this ad stuck to the typical Dunkin commercial method, it was still a good ad compared to many other ones this year, even if it didn’t step too much outside of the box.
Personally I enjoyed the Coors Light commercial also it was cute! It was a couple of sloths participating in activities that maybe aren’t well set up for their slow nature, but made for a funny ad. From doing a cycling class to typing away on a keyboard to chasing the lawnmower, they definitely tried it all! The song choice was great also and went well with the message: that even if you have a case of the Mondays, you can make it better with a CASE (of beer) of the Mondays (branded onto the box).
Alix Earle’s rising fame earned her a spot in not one but two Super Bowl commercials this year – Poppi and Carl’s Jr. The Carl’s Jr. Commercial starred her walking through a frat tailgate saying “been there, done that” and basically advertising their new burger as the hangover cure for a post-gameday pick me up. I think this was a great marketing choice because they said the burgers would be free on the app the day after the Super Bowl, and mentions of free stuff always get people listening. The second was for Poppi which also starred fellow influencer Jake Shane. Jake and other people in the ad were all confused about what drink to grab…a problem that Alix and several others solved by saying “just get a Poppi!” Rob Rausch from this year’s season of Love Island was also in this commercial!!
The Him and Hers ad was definitely….interesting. It started off by describing the current obesity epidemic in the United States, and how the food companies are out for profit and not the health and well-being of their consumers. These things are all true and raising awareness about these kinds of issues is important, but His and Hers was not really trying to raise awareness about these social issues. Rather, they were trying to sell their new Ozempic dupe, which is a weight loss drug. Many people pointed out the irony of making an ad about a broken system while simultaneously trying to sell an expensive weight loss product that originally comes from that broken system. Though the aspect of this ad of raising awareness about the obesity epidemic in America is important, the dystopian elements of this commercial did not escape viewers.
One of the most popular ads with some of the students at AMHS was the NFL ad. Quinn Enright (12) and Sophia Benich (12) both said this ad was one that they remembered and we can see why! It started out in a high school with typical jocks and nerds and then showed a new girl – one who challenged him about football. There was a montage of girls playing flag football and then finally a 1v1 between the new girl and a boy on the football team – a 1v1 which she won. The commercial advocated for girls flag football to become an official varsity sport in all 50 states which I think is very important!! Student Chloe Trowman (12) said it was definitely a good message and very inspiring!
