Raptor Athletics is breaking new ground this year with the first-ever Junior Varsity Women’s lacrosse team. Thanks to the many middle schoolers from SOA who decided to give lax a shot, there were enough girls for two teams. This is very exciting news as it helps us continue growing the game and will hopefully allow for a strong lacrosse program at Magnet for many years to come.
However, this isn’t the only immense change, as the team is still adjusting to the loss of our 4 beloved seniors from the Class of 2024. Without them, the team has been forced into a bit of a transition period. It especially feels unnatural to step foot on the field without graduated star midfielder and Raptors Glax legend, Sophia Locasio, who holds all the AMHS Women’s Lacrosse records. Being such a strong player, our team was somewhat centered around her. Our consistent offensive goal was to set her up and let her go to work. Now without her, the team is definitely mourning but also growing and stepping up.
Stay tuned for more information on the brand-new JV team! But for now, let us introduce you to the 18 girls who make up the Varsity Lacrosse:
Sousa Waggoner (12) – Captain
Street Wilson (12) – Captain
Chloe Trowman (12)
Isla Todd (12)
Caroline Champagne (12)
Jill Gunn (11)
Caitlin Farr (11)
Sara Mojica (11)
Hayden Moody (11)
Rowan Engelke (11)
Maggie Conlon (11)
Wren Kennedy (10)
Clementine Willard (10)
Lauren Schafer (10)
Mia Dewey (10)
Julia Dennie (10)
Claire Livermore (10)
Moreen Jang (9)
Taylor Summers and Caroline Roncalli are returning as our coaches after a successful first season last year. Coach Summners is our head coach and Coach Caroline is our assistant coach. Coach Summers played lacrosse in college at DePauw University. Coach Caroline played goalie in college at Sewanee and frequently works with our goalie, 4-year Varsity Senior, Caroline Champagne (CC). Speaking of CC, she is an excellent goalie who has been playing since middle school. When asked about her final season, CC tells us that she is excited to give it her all and believes that this group of girls can most definitely pull off a winning season.

As for captains, Street Wilson (12) and Sousa Waggoner (12) will return for their second year in the position. Having many years of both school and club lacrosse experience, Sousa and Street make an extremely dynamic duo that brings lots of skill and lacrosse IQ to the table. The team normally has a total of four captains, but after former captains Sophia LoCascio and Louisa Mulvey graduated, there are now open spots for two new juniors or seniors to secure. While they have yet to figure out who these captains will be, they are sure to make great leaders.
This year’s new additions are Moreen Jang (9), Isla Todd (12), and SOA student Sara Mojica (11). They have all meshed with the team very well and are quickly picking up essential lacrosse skills. Although our lacrosse team occasionally lacks in skill, it never lacks in spirit or togetherness. So, these new recruits are having no trouble becoming a part of our close-knit crew. Isla says she decided to join because “I heard about Chloe Trowman picking up the sport last year as a junior and I thought: ‘Well, if a junior can do it, a senior can do it!’” She tells us that she is having so much fun and feels that in just two weeks she has already learned so much. She also has lots of fun watching the Boys’ team practice with Chloe and Sousa.
Street Wilson, Lauren Schaffer, Caitlyn Farr, Clementine Willard, and Mia Dewey will all be on the middie line this season. There are 3 midfielders on the field at a time so this group of girls will all be playing an intense mix of midfield, attack, and defense. Lauren says: “I feel confident in this line up, we all played with each other last year so we know everyone’s strengths and weaknesses and can use that knowledge to make the magic happen.”

Our attack lineup is held down by AMHS Junior, Jill Gunn, who plays below goal and loves to assist other teammates. Some other crucial attackers are Chloe Trowman, Moreen Jang, and other midfielders who occasionally hop down to this position.
As for the defensive side, the team is looking towards an almost entirely new starting lineup aside from Sousa Waggoner. After losing two crucial defenders this past year, our new group will have to quickly get to know each other and learn how to communicate effectively before the season starts.
Since the team only has 18 people this year, as captains we are most hype for everyone to grow closer and closer. Since Coach Summers loves to plan fun team bonding activities like beach yoga, themed practices, team dinners, secret sister, and group cycle classes, we believe that our team will have plenty of chances to blossom into something beautiful and keep becoming stronger.
Make sure to come out and support our stellar team this year! The schedule is posted below.
