Smash Bros take Magnet

An iconic game invaded Mr. Philips room –  a Smash Bros tournament –  but I was wondering…what is Smash Bros (yes, it’s true, some of us don’t know what it is).  Well, for those of us in the dark, Smash Bros is a game of crossover fighting from different characters from across the Nintendo franchise. The original Super Smash Bros was released in 1999 for Nintendo 64; this game only had 12 playable characters…it has changed quite a bit in the last 16 years. The newest form of the the video game Super Smash Bros for Wii U has 54 playable characters as opposed to the 12 original playable characters. The characters range from the original Nintendo characters like Mario and Luigi to newer ones like Wii Fit Trainer. But could the Wii Fit Trainer help out the 23 incoming players in this two week tournament?

The two week double elimination tournament started Monday, December 7th and ended Friday, December 18th. Six  matches were played per day. The tournament was  held on 3 Wii U setups put together by seniors Jason Goldberg and Harrison Kerr.  Jason said, “we decided to do it partly for the video game research club, and partly because we love the game and wanted to come to school and play with friends.” The fee for entering the tournament was $5 and the proceeds will go to a good cause (still being determined).

Now, the real question was…who would win this two week tournament? The predicted winner was either junior, Aldo Moreno-Reyes, or senior, Harrison Kerr, but it was anyone’s game.

HOWEVER…….

The winner of the Smash Bros. Tournament was Bohan Wang, a FRESHMAN!!! It was a major upset to the predicted upperclassmen.  Interviews are forthcoming.
