As students, we are lucky to attend a school that offers so many different clubs and chapters to take part in. One of the amazing clubs is the Academic Magnet High School Library Advisory Council.
The mission of the Library Advisory Council is to promote reading and make the library better by making it more useful for students and staff, according to their student leader Camille Ross. They are also led by their teacher advisor Dr. Russell. With 20-25 members, this council is really making a difference on our Bonds Wilson campus. One example of their amazing projects is their renovation of the Bonds Wilson room at the entrance of the library. Bonds Wilson was a highschool from 1950 till it was demolished in 1985. During this time, many treasured relics of this campus were lost. This was when Lonnie Hamilton and James Turner, alumnus of Bonds Wilson, began collecting resources as to make sure this history of this campus was not lost forever. The Bonds Wilson Campus room is “dedicated to the history of the previously all-Black high school that once rested on our campus”. It was the work of an Academic Magnet High School alumni, William Pugh. He did this as an eagle scouts project. Currently, they are working towards creating a website that will highlight the accomplishments of our school and will be a centralized place for all information regarding Bonds-Wilson high. We also have the Library Advisory Council to thank for the addition of plants, bean bags, and other tokens to the library over the years.
One project that the Library Advisory Council here at Academic Magnet has recently accomplished is partnering with Liberty Hill Association, who help to try to create a safe and exciting community, to help decorate a tree in honor of our Bonds Wilson campus and to try to foster stronger relationships between the teachers, the staff, the students, and the community. Working with the president of the Liberty Hill Association, Hester McFadden, who presented this association to our faculty last year, Academic Magnet took part in Liberty Hills Christmas on the Hill at Felix Pinney Community Center. It is located across from the Dollar Tree, so make sure to take a look next time you pass by. This is our first year putting up a tree. Many teachers and faculty helped with this project, including Ms. Gomez, Ms. Vann, Mr. Lovering (by creating a 3D printed tree topper), and Coach Butt’s study hall from School of the Arts. Our school was able to photocopy some pictures from old Bonds Wilson yearbooks and decoupage them onto ornaments. Dr. Russell said that, “the Bonds Wilson alumni and the Liberty Hill Association were really excited”. This Christmas on the Hill celebration took place last Saturday from 1 to 7. There was hot cocoa and a very exciting festival to celebrate this holiday season.
If you are interested in joining this amazing club and getting some service hours, they meet every other Tuesday in one of the meeting rooms in the library. And they are always open to new members.
