If you don’t know what Spotify Wrapped or Apple Replay is, you should start listening to music now so you can participate next year! At the end of each year, Spotify and Apple Music compile all your listening stats for the year and share your top five artists, songs, and number of minutes listened, among other things. Each app is unique to what they share and how they do it, but I chose to ask the entire school what they came up with.
Starting strong with the freshmen, we have Camille Bowser, whose top five artists were PARTYNEXTDOOR, Drake, Beyoncé, Usher, and Travis Scott. This was actually really similar to mine so shoutout to Camille for having awesome taste in music! For the top five songs, she had three PARTYNEXTDOOR songs, bearing good evidence of him as her number 1 artist! She also had a whopping 144,591 minutes for the year which totals over 100 days of listening to music… I’m in shock. Camille says her headphones are ALWAYS on. I can tell!!
Next, we have Marc Williams, whose top five artists were Rex Orange County, Blurred, Tyler, the Creator, Steve Lacy, and Kanye West. The only one I haven’t heard of is Blurred, so I’m exciting to broaden my listening horizons after this! His top five songs are “For Lovers” by Lamp, “Taking What’s Not Yours” by TV Girl, “Dark Red” and “Infrunami” both by Steve Lacy, and “Planet” by Aidan Bisset. Again, there are some new songs in there that I will definitely be checking out, and you should, too! Marc had 59,641 minutes of listening, which (spoiler alert) is similar to mine!
For sophomores, we had Chloe Batiz and Trayce Figueroa. Chloe’s top five artists were The Crane Wives, Mitski, Cavetown, Phoebe Bridgers, and Arctic Monkeys. Trayce’s were Kanye West, JAY-Z, ¥$, Ty Dolla $ign, and Sublime. For top five songs, we have “Devil Town”, “We Fell in Love in October”, “Take Me To Church”, “Work Song”, and “More Than a Friend” for Chloe, and “Heartless”, “Jesus Walks”, “Jail”, “Gold Digger”, and “CARNIVAL” for Trayce. Chloe had a solid 63,149 minutes of listening, and Trayce came in second with 45,000 minutes. Chloe shared, “I was very surprised by what songs and albums I listened to the most, I would have not guessed those. Also, I honestly thought I listened to more than 63k minutes of music, I’ll do better next year.” Trayce simply said “Kanye is the goat.” Real.
Unfortunately only one junior responded to my survey… thank you Amaris! Her top five artists were Alice in Chains, Metallica, Jerry Cantrell, Nirvana, and Type O Negative. She said she spent “20,003 minutes listening to Alice In Chains and I’m in the top 0.005% (top 40,000) of listeners.” That’s some dedication! Also, all five of her top songs were by Alice in Chains. I’m impressed! She had 104,089 minutes of listening… also impressive!
Now for the seniors: Hank “Big Bank Hank” Mengedoht listened to 131,623 minutes of music this year. His top five artists were Dire Straits, Melvin Taylor, J.J. Cale, Pink Floyd, and Jack Johnson, and his top five songs were “Lady Writer”, “Sultans of Swing”, “You’re Latest Trick”, “Six Blade Knife”, and “Once Upon a Time in The West”. He definitely has a specific taste, but I love Dire Straits too! Hank says some honorable mentions are: the Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, and James Taylor.
Lilly Sturm had 46,195 minutes, and she said, “🤑🤑💰💰💵💵💵.” I totally agree! Her top five artists were The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Tyler, The Creator, and Led Zeppelin. Her top five songs were “Dancin’ Around My Grave”, “Dust in a Baggie”, “Ripple”, “Ballad of Big Nothing”, and “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.” Great picks Lilly!!
Now, I feel as though I have to share mine to prove my credibility here. I listened to 55,883 minutes of music this year. My top five artists were Billie Eilish, Travis Scott, Taylor Swift, Drake, and Tyler, The Creator. My top five songs were “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, “Redbone” by Childish Gambino, “Nice for What” by Drake, “Ant Pile” by Dominic Fike, and “LUNCH” by Billie Eilish.
