The 2024 season for the South Carolina Gamecocks has brought many emotions to fans, ending with a 9-3 regular season record and a final game in the Citrus Bowl against Illinois. While the Gamecocks did not make the College Football Playoff, the team’s performance with coach Shane Beamer went well past early season predictions, with many placing Carolina as a 6-6 team. The program has a bright future, with lots of commits and young players who can continue to grow.
Season Recap
The Gamecocks started the season with a close 23-19 victory over Old Dominion, not a great start; however, they followed with a 31-6 win against Kentucky. The Gamecocks faced setbacks with close (and debatable) losses to LSU (36-33) and Alabama (27-25), and a more crushing loss by Ole Miss (27-3). Even with these disappointing losses, the Gamecocks responded impressively, ending the season with six consecutive wins, many against ranked teams. Significant wins included a 44-20 win over #10 Texas A&M and a close 17-14 win against in-state rival Clemson, where freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers dominated and had a game winning drive in the final minutes, with the game ending in a South Carolina interception.
Standout Players and NFL Prospects
- LaNorris Sellers (QB): The redshirt freshman demonstrated immense talent, dropping over 2,600 passing yards and 20 touchdowns, with 662 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground. His dual-threat capability has drawn comparisons to Gamecock legends, quickly making him a known name, with many comparing him to Cam Newton.
- Raheim Sanders (RB): The senior transfer dominated on offense with 881 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. His great performance has given him a status as a top running back prospect for the NFL draft.
- Nick Emmanwori (DB): Leading the defense with 24 tackles and two interceptions, Emmanwori’s defensive skills and leadership have been groundbreaking for the Gamecocks defense. His draft stock has risen considerably, with many placing him as a first round draft pick.
Coaching Changes
The start of the offseason has brought some serious changes within the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains left to fill the head coaching position at App State, leaving a vacancy that will need to be filled by the new Athletic Director, Jeremiah Donati. There are many mixed emotions on Loggain’s departure, with many noting his iffy play calling, but also the relationship he had with current players.
Defensive coordinator Clayton White is a candidate for head coach at NC State, given his defensive success at USC; I’m hoping he does not leave as he has been great for us this year.
These changes present both challenges and opportunities as Coach Beamer seeks to maintain stability while bringing new ideas.
Recruiting and Future Outlook
The Gamecocks’ 2025 recruiting class is shaping up to be formidable, featuring commitments from top in-state talents:
- Jayden Sellers (WR): A three-star recruit from Florence, South Carolina, and younger brother of LaNorris Sellers, Jayden brings speed and reliable hands to the receiving corps.
- Malik Clark (WR): Coming from Rock Hill, South Carolina, this four-star wide receiver adds depth and playmaking ability to the offense.
These additions, along with the development of existing players, position South Carolina for continued success. The upcoming Citrus Bowl against Illinois offers a platform to end the season on a high note and bring momentum into the next season.
Looking Ahead
With a great base and a mix of experienced players and promising up and comers, the Gamecocks could easily bring strong play in the coming years. I was going to talk about coaching vacancies but we got Mike Shula and he’s a dawg, lots of experience, I think he’s going to work well for our offense. As the team prepares for the Citrus Bowl, fans have lots of reason to be happy about the future of South Carolina football.
