‘Tis the Season! December is finally here, and it is officially, irrevocably, Holiday season. While some of us began celebrating before Thanksgiving, others claim November is too early to begin decorating. Whatever you believe, now is certainly time to get into the spirit! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Bodhi Day, or something else, your traditions are what make your Holiday season unique and special! Read along to hear about how students at Magnet are decking the halls.
First up, a freshman, Spencer Wilhelm, has a few Holiday traditions he celebrates with family. A common tradition for many families, including Spencer’s, is visiting the James Island County Park’s Festival of Lights, which is his favorite and most memorable tradition. In addition to this, Spencer and his family “go to the Blue Christmas, Advent Lessons and Carol, Christmas Lessons and Carols, and the Christmas Eve services at [their] church every year.” What a great way to appreciate the season. Instead of having just one tree, Spencer and his family decorate a larger and smaller one. They also prefer to use fake trees instead of real ones.
Trayce Figueroa in 10th grade says their family “all go on the winter arc and workout for 5 hours a day.” Impressive! Along with other decorations, a most notable one for Trayce’s family is their big Christmas tree made of colorful lights which gets set up in her front yard every year.
Another sophomore, Jaxon Chambers, says his favorite tradition for Christmas is opening presents, which I think we can all agree is definitely part of the fun! However he also enjoys going out to dinner with his family at Frankie Bones on Hilton Head every year. Not only do the Chambers decorate their tree every year, but they make an effort to collect older ornaments. Timeless!
Julien Broadhurst is a 9th grader whose favorite tradition is visiting family. How sweet! Not only that, but he also loves spending time decorating their fake Christmas tree. It seems fake trees are making a comeback!
Our sophomore and freshman are certainly the most spirited, because another 9th grader, Isaiah Perlmutter, says his whole family participates in a group gift swap! A most notable decoration according to Isaiah is the special pillows their family puts out during Christmas Time. Festive! As far as traditions go, Isaiah speaks for a lot of us when he says that he really “just like[s] eating the food.” Me too bro me too.
Last but not least, it is reassuring to know that at least one senior still celebrates the most wonderful time of the year. Alaina Jarrett shares her Holiday experience, spent with her entire mom’s side of the family who comes to stay with them over the break. On Christmas Eve, they always read “The Night Before Christmas” for her little cousins. While the Jarretts decorate a tree just like most families, theirs has a special twist- every ornament on the tree is either one her and her little sister Mazie have made, bought as souvenirs on trips, or received as a gift from others! This is sure to make tree decorating all the more memorable, since each ornament has its own special meaning!
While I am sure many students at Magnet celebrate the Holidays in similar ways, they were not all able to find the google form in their email-especially the juniors. Check your email, juniors! Regardless, thank you to everyone who participated and filled out the form! Good luck on your midterms and we wish you a Happy Holidays from your Raptors on Newspaper!!
